The full title is "Black Tattoo Art: Modern Expressions of the Tribal." This thick book (536 pages, mostly photos) covers Neotribal, Dotwork, Art Brut, Traditional Revival and Thai/Buddhist tattooing. It is large format with good photography and printing quality. It focuses on individual artist in these styles and includes well written interviews and introductions to each style, in German and English.

The Neotribal section is excellent, and includes an interesting interview with Leo Zulueta, the father of the style.

The Dotwork section - tattoos constructed of tiny black dots - is amazing (a sample is shown on the cover).

The Traditional Revival (Samoan, Maori, Filipino...) and Thai/Buddhist sections are good but not an extensive look at these areas.

The Art Brut section is interesting as it is a relatively new style and not previously well documented. Yet it feels out of place in a tribal study as it has literal subject maters and is often multi-color (as opposed the black abstract decorate nature of traditional and neo tribal).

All in all, an amazing collection of beautifully designed, expertly executed tattoos.

Great book featuring the best in black tattoos. From tribal, dot work to art brut, this book showcased some of the finest artists and often uncommercialised works from Xed Lehead, Colin Dale, Leo Zulueta, Cory Ferguson, Rory Keating, Patrick Huettlinger and modern greats Yann Black and others. The chapter on Art Brut is inspirational and yet bizzare as tattoo takes on a truly free-form.

At over 536 pages, Black Tattoo Art offers inspirational works that sets the new standards in tattoo work.

Simply a great book.

This book is a validation for all of us tattoo artists experimenting in pure graphic design and techniques. The only disappointment was the book's assertion that the "Art Brut" tattoo movement is merely a French phenomenon. There are artists a plenty (myself included) who can be lumped under this term in the US.

The book itself is full of huge full color pictures and weighs a ton. Definately something that needs to be on a table to page through.

I got sucked into this book for 2 hours at Black & Blue Tattoo in San Francisco. Amazing work by a variety of artists.

It is an amazing book to have. It's full of great quality images. It is a book that has lots of inspirations for tattoo artists or those who want to adorn they body, but it is also an incredible source of patterns and anyone would be happy to have it in their library.
