Start of a new era for an old hero,

This review is from: Black Terror, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I was very interested in this book after reading Superpowers. Black Terror came across as one of the most interesting characters in that series. This collection is a decent enough start to Terror's own series but some of it just didn't make sense. Going for the president & calling it mutiny was very strange. This part is a SPOILER - reunion with Tim was fairly anti-climatic. The one thing this series does accomplish is that the saga of the Superpowers has been moved on from the original Hardcover collection and this nicely sets it up for the rest of the Black Terror series & the next volume of Superpowers. The art is very good as well. Recommended for those who are interested in the Project Superpowers world.

Great intro to the new revival of Golden Age characters.,

Great jumping on point for the new revival of golden age heroes from comic book artist/visionary Alex Ross.
Gets you acclimated to the 'SuperPowers' universe with its most exciting character, The Black Terror. Fantastic layouts and pencil work by interior artist Mike Lilly! Some of the panel to panel work is very innovative. PRO's-Alex Ross' cover and sketches, Jim Kreugar's (at times)politically charged script, Mike Lilly's innovative layouts and pencil work plus a nice 9 page sketchbook section showing Lilly's designs and full penciled covers, cover gallery by Ross, Lilly, John Romita Sr., George Tuska, Tim Sale, Greg Land,...Well printed trade paperback with slick paper and heavy glossy cover stock (cover and interior page paper stock much better than the individually printed comics). CON's-Very minor but I wish they included ALL of the alternate covers that were printed as variants and retailer exclusives(they had like 99% of them though). The most standout one being a missing Mark Texiera sketch cover and the 'negative' art style covers as well. Also with trades like this, I wish they'd have an original story short (like 5-6 pages) of new story and art to make the trade extra special. Also, sometimes wish the art was inked traditionally. I recommend this to any fan of Golden Age comic book characters, Alex Ross completists and fans of interesting and fun comic book layout designs/pencils. |
