Product Description

Considered the Young Turks of the Chicago blues scene, The Cash Box Kings are dedicated to carrying on the spirit of the 1940 s and 50 s post-war Chicago blues sound as well as the Delta blues music of the 20 s and 30 s. But these illustrious torchbearers also add a bravado, energy and freshness to the mix that results in a distinctive musical experience. With a focus on the raw, stripped-down, ensemble playing that was the hallmark of the post-war sound, the band showcases the music of Chess Records and Sun Records while adding a healthy dose of original music that captures the essence of the Memphis and Chicago blues sounds of the 40 s and 50 s.

Review

'This band has taken old school Chicago blues and brought it jumping
and hollering into the 21st century. I ve seen a lot of bands play
this style of music, but I gotta say you guys take that old school
sound and go somewhere new with it...' --Dan Aykroyd

We were fortunate to see the Cash Box Kings in Chicago, at Buddy Guy's Legends this past summer. Never heard of them before. Which was too bad, because they put on a great show. If you get a chance to see them live, go. You won't be disappointed. And this CD is great. Great song and performance. Hope the kings can make it out to Los Angeles soon.

"Black Toppin’“ by the Chicago musicians Cash Box Kings, is like stepping into a time-machine and going back to the golden era of blues music, as these musicians play in the tradition of the 1940’s and 50’s post-war Chicago blues sound as well as the Delta blues music of the 20’s and 30’s. To quote their own words: The album runs the gamut between delta, swamp blues, and straight-up Chess-era Chicago blues along with jump blues, some Mick Taylor-era Stones and what they themselves call “blues-a-billy,” their own hybrid of Sun Records’ blues and Sun Records’ country and rockabilly.

The Cash Box Kings consist of Joe Nosek (harmonica player and vocalist), Oscar Wilson (guitarist and vocalist), Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith (drummer) and Joel Patterson (guitarist). This CD, which was produced by Nosek, features 13 tracks: 8 original songs, 5 of them written by Nosek and 3 by Wilson, and 5 covers, like Dixon’s “Too Late” and “Run Run Run” by the Velvet Underground but also the traditional “Walking Blues.”

My personal favorites: the soulful opener “Blues Falling Down On Me,” the lively title track “Black Toppin,’” the rock ‘n’ roller ”I Don’t Want to Fight” and “Tom Cat Blues.” With this great combination of blues and rockabilly, the Cash Box Kings drag the old-school Chicago blues straight into the 21st century for a new audience, at the same time making sure that it will be a while before you’ll hear a blues album that will be able to equal let alone top “Black Toppin.’“

Very pleased with this recording. Great harmonica and slide guitar, I'm sure we've all heard blues like this before.
But when all elements blend together perfectly as Kings do on this recording, it's worth hearing again and again. Highly recommended.

This might be the Cash Box Kings best album yet. Wonderful 1950s blues classics, that feel fresh, and the guitar tone is spot on 50's blues. I have 4 albums by this band, and I like this one the most, my second favorite being I-94 Blues. There are some new styles for the band here, notably Run Run Run, the last track. Highly recommend this to any fan of Chicago blues music.
