5.0 out of 5 stars BLACK, BY TRACY BROWN
When I started reading this book I immediately connected with the tradgedy's and triumphs of Kaia. I couldn't put the book down until I was finished. The fact that the book is titled "BLACK" doesn't really give anyone a clue as to what the book is really about. But the book leaves more to the imagination with a title as simple as that. 3.0 out of 5 stars Life Lessons Are Often Learned Too Late
Tracy Browns novel Black is an excellent read of learning life lessons and moving on.
The plot of friends that were so different yet so alike in this novel will capture you and keep you wanting to read to the very end. It is a tale of love, life, and friendship.

Symphony, a young black female whose mother was raising two kids on her own and thought as...

5.0 out of 5 stars BLACK, BY TRACY BROWN, October 17, 2003

When I started reading this book I immediately connected with the tradgedy's and triumphs of Kaia. I couldn't put the book down until I was finished. The fact that the book is titled "BLACK" doesn't really give anyone a clue as to what the book is really about. But the book leaves more to the imagination with a title as simple as that. I am a white woman who grew up with all races, especially black people. I was able to feel the pain for this character. I felt the joys. I also felt and knew the feeling of her being afraid of her mother. This book brought up more emotions than one would imagine. This book made me laugh, it made me angry, it made me happy, and it also made me cry and cry and cry! As a matter of fact I went to work the next day with swollen eyes. I feel that Tracy Brown went to the extreme on her first novel. To be able to make people feel the emotions of the characters in a book is strong and is not an easy task. No matter what race you are this book is a great book to read especially if you are ignorant to the fact of what really happens in other peoples lives. Great job Tracy! And my sincere thanks for the swollen eyes! I cried way after the book was finished! Until your next book.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, February 9, 2004

This book was great! I read this book in one day. It will have you happy, angry and sad. Kaia's goes through some real tough times, but with love, loyalty and friendship, she is able to come to grips with all that life has thrown at her. Now this book is not your typical "street life" book, but has the elements. You will find yourself hating certain characters, while loving others. I laughed and cried while reading this book. This is a must read. It was simply wonderful!

4.0 out of 5 stars Princess Meets Her Prince, June 9, 2008
This review is from: Black (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
Black is a story of Kaia Wesley who faces different adversities in the homefront growing up. With a mother who despises her and a father who adored her, Kaia life became even more complicated when she witnesses her fathers death.

Budding into a beautiful teenager, Kaia meets Aaron who falls head over heels in love with her and she with him. Finally having that sense of security and love that she deserves another hindrance arises that leaves her pregnant and alone to fend for herself. With the help and advice of her friends Kaia comes to stand on her own.

When one of her so-called friends betrays her, she will then find out who her real friends are. As the saying goes "Keep your friends close and enemies closer".

This novel will make you laugh, cry, and angry. Tracey Brown did a great job, minus the few grammatical errors that I came across throughout the book. I recommend Black to everyone, the young and the old, just simply wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars From Cocoon to Butterfly, November 10, 2003

This book was good. I wish it was a little longer but hey I did not write it. Tracy Brown really showed us how Kaia evolved. This book is a must read. You will cry, laugh and also say yeah I hate this broad. N-E-WAY to sum it up:
Kaia was a strong independent person. She tolerated a lot. All her heart ache would finally be eased.
Sympathy was that girl. She was down for hers and really knew who her friends were. She cherished them all and they was grateful.
Aaron was cool a little dumb at times but hey he is a man. Once he got it together he was able to act like one.
This book is a great read. Go pick it up. You will not be diappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was like that., November 8, 2003

I not too long ago had the pleasure of reading Black. I say pleasure, because this book was a joy to read. At first I had mixed feelings about it because it seemed a little softer than what I'm used to. Once I got into the story, I was really digging it.
I was cheering for Kaia and Aaron, and I was touched by Symphany. That chick Gisell just left a bad taste in my mouth. That broad deserved everything she got.
Black is what's up and I'm just waiting for it to make the best seller's list.

Take a bow, Tracy. You did you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical urban love tale, January 20, 2005
This review is from: Black (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
With so many urban love stories in today's market this book was a refreshing stray from the norm. Instead of the typical girl meets boy, boy become incarcerated and girl struggles without him this book delves into the story in a totaly different fashion. Ms. Brown's portrayal of a young girl's family life from the opening pages is like no other.

This is a book that I happily recommended to my 16 year old sister for there were many positive messages to be gained. Messages that usually get lost in todays urban books that sensationalize street life. Black is a great read. Trust me you won't be dissapointed and you will need to have the kleanex near by.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy This BOOK!!!!, April 18, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Black (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
As I started reading "Black", the storyline seemed very familiar to me. After awhile, it came to me. This book was based on a short story that Tracy Brown had in the book "The Game: Short Stories About Life". I remember after reading this as a short story, I couldn't wait to read the entire book. This book takes Kaia from a child into womanhood without ever receiving love from the person you want it the most - your mother. Kaia's sisters didn't help her either. She was definitely emotionally abused all the time she lived in her mother's house. Despite this horrible abuse, Kaia triumphed as a positive person in her life. Kaia could have gone so many ways but she stayed true to herself with the help of her boyfriend and friends. She also finds out that everyone who says they're your friend are not always your friend. Kaia's boyfriend Aaron is a good guy although he winds up in terrible circumstances. I was saddened by the ending, not only because of what happens but because the book was coming to a close. I give this book 4.5 stars instead of 5 stars because of one reason - the numerous grammatical errors. I love to read urban tales but come on people, let's step up our game on the proofreading issue. These authors have to put out error free books to compete with mainstream books. It's condescending to readers to think we won't notice errors. It also gives those who feel that urban books are a fad, just one more reason to say why these books don't belong in big name bookstores on the display racks. Please print one copy and read it thoroughly to make sure that it's error free before putting so many out to press. These errors take value away from the book and that's a reflection on the author. At one point I was reading and an ENTIRE paragraph repeated itself! This should not happen, you don't see these type of mistakes in mainstream books. Other than that, this was a fantastic read! Go out and buy this book!

After reading the excert, I could not wait to buy the book! And boy was I pleased, I read the book in one day. This makes you laugh, and cry. I was so impressesed by the book that I had my little sister read it (she is not an avid reader), and she read it in one day too. Tracy Brown, I'm anxiously waiting for your next one....

This review is from: Black (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
This book was one of the best books I have read. One of my top 5. If you havent read it yet, you have too. It made me realize that you have to really check who you call your friends, because some of them are just plain two-faced. I love this book, and I am glad I bought it. This is a MUST READ. I guarantee you will enjoy it.
