4.0 out of 5 stars Darkness and Deception
Every word we say to people, if we hear it enough it starts to ring true. If you are someone's friend will you continuously bring them down with your insults or lift them up with your compliments? T. Styles weaves a story of an unusual type of friendship in Black And Ugly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Black and Hot!!!
This book is an example of what happens when we don't praise our children on how beautiful they are. The lead character is constently put down by her mother and, unfortunately, begins to believe that she is actually black and ugly. This book is also an example of how our children follow in our footsteps. One of the other four main characters chooses the same profession...

4.0 out of 5 stars Darkness and Deception, March 21, 2007
This review is from: Black & Ugly (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
Every word we say to people, if we hear it enough it starts to ring true. If you are someone's friend will you continuously bring them down with your insults or lift them up with your compliments? T. Styles weaves a story of an unusual type of friendship in Black And Ugly.

Four friends that have been together from early childhood, have their friendship tested by jealousy, lies, cheaters, and secrets. Parade Knight is dark-skinned, and because her mother and Sky Taylor, who is supposed to be her best friend, tell her that she is black and ugly, she believes them. No matter who tells Parade that she is beautiful, she still thinks that she is not because that is what she has heard her entire life. Even though Sky belittles Parade, Parade would do anything for Sky.

Sky is light-skinned with pretty hair and clothes to die for. She thinks that she is better than everyone, and even though she is pretty, it makes her ugly inside. Sky's "I am better than you" attitude goes too far at times. She goes so far that she does the unthinkable, but a simple game will bring the truth to light.

Daffany Stans is the resident prostitute, and though her friends know that this is how she funds her lifestyle, they do not know much more. Daffany keeps all her business to herself. One of her secrets almost costs her her life.

Miss Wayne is their self-proclaimed girlfriend, but do not call him gay. He is the comic relief in this circle of friends, and he keeps it real with them. He knows just about everybody's secrets and he has his own opinion on them, but he cares for them all just the same.

This story is told from the first person and third person's point of view. The first person was when the main characters were telling the story and then there was the subplot where the supporting characters were told in third person. There were a few editing misses, but other than that the story was a quick read. I would recommend this to anyone that is tired of reading the usual type of urban fiction that deals with drugs, prostitutes and drive-bys. This book offers a little more substance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by it's cover, June 1, 2007

When I first saw this book on Amazon I immediately thought this was just another "ghetto, thug, all about the game" book. To my surprise this book was a great read. This young author has a great talent as she is able to bring the reader into the lives of three friends. My only problem with this book is the cover and title as it is very misleading as those of us who are mature and enjoy reading books with substance. The cover and title gives one a preconceived idea of its works.

This book has great it has it all from beatdowns handed out by ms black and ugly Parade herself, to issues that some black people face in believing that a lighter complexion is better than dark skin, it has backstabbing and a whole lot of drama at its best. It held my attention from page 1 and I hated for the book to end. Ms. Styles this was a great book I loved everything about it and the ending had me surprised to say the least, please keep em coming.......Everyone should get this book you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, May 28, 2007

Im not surprised that T. Styles wrote another banger cuz the 1st one was off the hook. Im glad she wrote a book like this b/c I am a dark skinned sista and I mean I do not feel like im ugly but most times i feel like a dude will always go after the light skin girl prettry or not. And i have always felt some kind of way about my complexion b/c of that fact. But anyways one of the main characters feels she is ugly and relies heavily on her friend for self-confidence. They play a game that determines everyone's fate. This book was off the hook i had no idea how everything would play out but i loved how it all came together. The last 15 pages i had to know what was going to happen. Im glad that Sky got what she deserved and things worked out for Parade. Good read pick up ASAP and if u have not read a Hustler's Son cop that too.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is the BOMB, January 21, 2007
This review is from: Black & Ugly (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
This book gets more than 5 stars from me. Ms Parade experience a lot of mental abuse from her mother and Ms. Sky, who in my opinion was miserable themselves. This book is about true friendship, lies, betrayal and self image issues. Whoever said black is not beautiful needs to read this book. Whoever said light skin is better needs to read this book. In my opinion all black skin is beautiful whether its light-skin or dark. Beauty is created within. For all them dark girls who are insecure about their skin color I advise you to read this book. Ms. Styles did her thing with a Hustler's Son and now it's Black and Ugly. I hope she make a sequel to this book or make another book with cameos from Ms. Parade and Ms. Wayne. I loved them to characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!!, April 26, 2009

U can't even explain how much I LOVED this book! It had me on edge. This book was so real because I do know dark skinned women that have a complex and are insecure about the way they look and think they aren't pretty because people made fun of their skin tone all their life. I RECCAMEND THIS BOOK TO: anyone that wants to see what happens when you tear down a person's selfesteem not knowing that it really does hurt them. You get to the victim's point of view and the suspects point of view. 5 STARS*****

Black and Ugly delivered. From the very first pages, I was captured and completely engrossed in this novel. Black and Ugly was the real deal. Raw with uncut emotion. Deceitful and vengeful. Real and uninhibited. The list goes on. 5+ stars. Sky got what was coming to her after all even when I was sure everything would end "happily ever after". I would like to read more about Parade, Miss Wayne, and of course Daffany's ultimate fate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read About The Betrayal Of Friends, January 1, 2009
This review is from: Black & Ugly (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
This book really told the story of what was growing in the main characters heart. It was definately a page turner and I was shocked again and again with the way the main character stood by while her friend breaks her heart again and again. The other reviwers are right. Watch the things you say but pay close attention to the things you listen to from others. It may prove to be a lie, or it may prove to be your undoing.
