As an African American, I was craving for documented data on this critical event. How disappointed I was after reading this book. I personally think its an insult to the heroic efforts of those mighty souls who accomplished so much while enduring hatred and bigotry of a magnitude few of us today can imagine.
I had to keep reminding myself I was supposedly reading factual accounts because it read more like a cheap novel. I'm going to purchase Hannibal B. Johnson's version in hopes of getting some indepth insight into the important events that unfolded in the town of Greenwood Oklahoma in 1921.

This book had so much promise and so much potential. I originally heard about the book in an email and was so excited that I purchased it that same day! A book about such a serious topic should have been written, edited, and published in a very serious manner; it was not. While there are instances in the book where the characters' speech is written in a way so that you can understand the southern accent, there are numerous (about 3 per page) other instances where you can tell the book wasn't even spell-checked, much less checked for grammatical errors - I mean simple errors that the spell check in Word should have caught! Anyway, overall, this was a great story, but a bad read!

Was Expecting More,
This review is from: Black Wallstreet (Paperback)
When I came across information about this event, which I had no previous knowledge of, I was eager to read about it. I order this book thinking it would give me a lot of insight into the Tulsa Race Riot, and Black Wall Street. The book is not as factual nor as informative as I was hoping for and like previously stated by another review, reads like a cheap novel.

Black Wall Street is a work of historical fiction which builds its story line along the events leading up to the Tulsa race riot of 1921. Unfortunately for what it merits as a matter of history, it is also a most terrible piece of writing. I am generous in offering it two stars on the basis of a documentary value as its only real redeeming quality is how much it makes you hunger to search out a biographical narrative of the events for yourself.
One of the major literary vices that are contained within the text is the repeated utterance of the term "BLACK WALLSTREET" by the characters written just as it is here in all capital letters. It comes across as purposely trite and cheesy resembling Keenan Ivory Wayans oft imitated "Message!" line from "Don't Be A Menace..." There is also the matter of language in the text which seems a pale affectation of period speech by someone very obviously writing after said period has passed. Were the book marketed as a literature for children, I might perhaps be more forgiving, but even as a tool for teaching, there is very little fodder for discussion here. All the tropes and stereotypes are thrown into the stew. All white men are racists with bad teeth, big guns and white sheets. Blacks and Jews try to gather and do business in harmony since they are both oppressed. All black people operate for the success and continuity of "BLACK WALLSTREET". I stumbled upon this work in some library giveaway box I am sure. It was not a very enjoyable read and I am quite glad that it is over. There are much better books on the subject available.

very interesting subject matter, i would love to know the whole story but i just can't get through this book. the spelling and grammar are horrible. the binding and typeface make the book look like it was published in a garage and then upon reading one paragraph it is evident that the book wasn't spell checked or edited at all...

Black Wallstreet: A Lost Dream,
By
This review is from: Black Wallstreet (Paperback)
I enjoyed the book; however, I read it for a historical point of view, but I felt more of his social impact--such as the people's everyday living environment, places they frequented (clubs, theaters, church), relationships, work environments and sources of income (legitimate and illegitimate) and racial tension. It therefore, came across has a good dramatic novel versus something of a historical substance. I recommend it because it is a good read dramatically but has far as the grammar is concerned--I felt like pulling out my read pen and correcting some of the grammatical errors.

Black Wallstreet is the best book I have read in a very long time. It had so much information that I didn't know about. I couldn't put the book down, I had to keep reading it. I give this book 100% rating. I will never forget these authors. I hope the one that is still living will write more books!
