An Opposite Book with a Twist!,
By H. Ward (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black? White! Day? Night! - A Book of Opposites (Ala Notable Children's Books (Awards)) (Neal Porter Books) (Hardcover)
As someone who works a lot with small children, I know from experience how much they love suprises in a book. I was a huge fan of Ms. Seeger's other books - Walter is Worried and The Hidden Alphabet because of their incredibly unique approach to tried and true subjects. This title has the same great element of suprise and clever, artistic approach that will delight kids (of all ages). I personally have had enormous amounts of fun with it each time I read it aloud!

Seeger's work looks deceptively simple but is more often than not quite surprising.
Black White Day Night is another lift-the-flap book of opposites that lives up to her other lift-the-flap projects: The Hidden Alphabet and Lemons are Not Red. Her bright and unfussy illustrations appeal to children and the cleverness of her designs will appeal to adults. I always find myself genuinely surprised when looking through her books which strike me as being very well-thought out and conceptualized.

My daughter loves it,

My daughter has just turned four, and she loves this book. She likes to try and read along with me, but doesn't recognise words yet. This book of opposites allows her to read along based on the shapes (even from the very first reading, because she could say the opposites). Plus she loves lifting the flaps to see what's underneath.

We selected this book to win the Caldecott award in my school because it is beautiful and my whole class can't stop looking at it. Even though we are in fifth grade, this is a picture book for all ages because it has something for everyone. Little kids can learn their opposites and older kids can see how cool it is that the author was able to make each page interesting and fun.

BEST OPPOSITE BOOK I'VE EVER READ!,
A Kid's Review

Just because this book is about opposites, it doesn't mean its just for kids 5 and under. The pictures are creative and colorful, and the way the author describes the opposites in pictures is totally awesome! This book can be a favorite for anyone, any age. If you read this book, you'll see that I'm not kidding about it!

Amazing Opposites! A ton of FUN!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Black? White! Day? Night! - A Book of Opposites (Ala Notable Children's Books (Awards)) (Neal Porter Books) (Hardcover)
This book is a fun way of teaching opposites. It's fun for little kids and older kids. For little kids (when they are learning to read) this is a good book, because it has very simple words and usually only two word per page. Black? White! Day? Night! has some of the COOLEST opposites! It is a flip book. So it will show something like a person in the front of a line. Then you flip up a flap and it shows the same person at the back of a line. There is one REALLY cool page. It shows a page with the word 'Simple?' and then when you lift the flap it shows.....READ IT AND FIND OUT!

Very Clever Opposite book,

The opposites in this book are unusual and very clever! But the illustrations may be to clever for the younger set. The book is rated for 4-8 and maybe the older ones will like it better. Of course by then they can usually spout the opposites (for that matter so can my 2.5 year old son) but this book brings interest back to the subject. Plays with perspectives and perceptions. But some of the unexpectedness of the illustrations were lost on my son. I enjoyed it and was very impressed that someone could have a new take on such an ordinary and much published children's subject!

This book is a larger-sized hardback with flaps to open. That alone I thought would pull our 3 yr old son in and make this one of his fave books. But not so. He'll read through it with me, but doesn't pick it on his own. Maybe it's because he already knows many of the concepts and he tends to prefer realistic colorful illustrations. Maybe better for a 2 yr old? Very nicely produced, good quality pages and printing.
