About the Author
Dr. Glenn Rand received his Bachelor and Master of Arts from Purdue University with a Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati. He has published and lectured about photography internationally with consultant clients that included the Eastman Kodak Company, Ford Motor Company, the Photo Marketing Association International as well as many other businesses and several colleges. Photographs by Dr. Rand are in the permanent collections of over twenty museums in the United States, Europe and Japan. He teaches in the graduate program at Brooks Institute of Photography.
David Litschel is a photographer, teacher, and writer. He received an MFA degree from the University of Michigan and a BFA degree from the University of Colorado. With 20 years of experience teaching photography, he is currently Academic Dean at Brooks Institute of Photography, California. His photographs and writings have appeared in numerous publications, and he has exhibited internationally.

Dr. Glenn Rand has taught since 1966. In these years he has taught and administered in public education, community colleges and universities. Since 2001 he has taught in the graduate program at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, California. In conjunction with these academic roles and consulting he has developed and reorganized several curricula for fine art photography, commercial photography, digital imaging and allied curricula. DR. Rand was recognized for his contributions to photographic education with the 2009 PIEA Excellence in Education Award.
He received his Bachelor and Master of Arts from Purdue University with a Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati centering on the Psychology of educational spaces with post-doctoral research as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Michigan.
Photographs by Glenn Rand are in thirty public museums collections in the United States, Europe and Japan and has exhibit widely. He has also had his photographs published as editorial, illustration and advertising.
He has published and lectured extensively about photography and digital imaging ranging from commercial aesthetics to the technical fine points lighting. Glenn has authored eight books including "Teaching Photography" (2006), "Film and Digital Techniques for Zone System Photography" (2008), "Lighting for Photography"(2008) and contributes regularly to various periodicals. He is a contributing editor for Rangefinder Magazine.

I am in a first semester photography class and this is the textbook. The book has an easy reading style, covers subject in detail, and is very attactively presented, nearly every second page is a full page black and white photo. This is one textbook I will keep. It is beautifully illustrated. As a novice photographer the short coming of the book for me is that there is no information on how the pictures were taken, film used, f-stop etc. I found the glossary and index very helpful.

This book has alot of great information in it. This book is great for beginning and even advance photographiers in that there is so much infomation. Also is a great reference guide if you were to forget some techinque or what filter to use. I really enjoyed this book, learned some new things. I feel that every photographier should have this book.
