5.0 out of 5 stars Symphonic black metal!!!, November 14, 2005
This review is from: Black Wings of Destiny (Audio CD)

I like this album over other bands that got the same style, is that simple. Dragonlord is a band of many veterans like Eric Peterson (Testament), and Steve Smith, so this guys know what they doing. This is Black metal in the vein of Dimmu Borgir, no more no less!!. So if you're into Dimmu, Cradle and Agathodaimon, try this!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Dosen't anyone notice the similarity to Emperor?, December 10, 2005
This review is from: Black Wings of Destiny (Audio CD)
This is the first Black Metal album I've bought in a long time now. I heard it and just couldn't resist. I'm pretty skeptical of any fresh BM acts out there because they usually just can't cut it as far as speed and brutality go. These guys nail it. I don't think I've heard a BM album this good since the last Emperor record. Comparing Dragonlord with inferior musicians like "Cradle of Filth" just dosen't do this album justice. This is Black Metal the way it was meant to be played, none of that wimpy melody-without-the-edge stuff. If you dig Emperor, Satirycon, and Old Man's Child, buy this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars soundtrack to your worst nightmares, December 21, 2005
This review is from: Black Wings of Destiny (Audio CD)
What really separates this group from the rest of the death and black metal bands out there is their ominous and haunting keyboard tones. They add just the right amount of contrast to the ferocious vocals and monster riffs. I'll forgive the utterly cliché album title. This disc is the soundtrack to your worst nightmares

4.0 out of 5 stars Great songwriting, but rarely hear the 'a-ha' moment, October 31, 2005

Let me explain -

The first album was good, but that was because we hadn't really heard Eric Peterson in his own element before. Granted 'Demonic' was an offshoot Testament release, it was tough to digest. Frankly, as much as I like Chuck Billy's vocals - he just isn't meant to sing death. Sorry. The first Dragonlord album was good because Eric got to break out and do something on his own. I liked the style, the production, and general approach to composition.

The second album of course deserves more scrutinity because it IS the second album - we expect more. While I liked the riffs and general song structure, I never really heard something that made me do a double-take. Sorry Eric, while I like your stuff, this was just too much of the same. And since I'm already in the gutter with hardcore fans, I might as well dig myself a grave - Eric's singing has to become a little more brutal - it's almost too artificial! But don't get me wrong, I love songs like 'Until the End' - very catchy!

Overall - buy it - support the bands/musicians you like/follow...it's worth a listen or two !

4.0 out of 5 stars Symphonic Black Metal ala Testament, April 21, 2008
This review is from: Black Wings of Destiny (Audio CD)
This album reminded me greatly of Dimmu-Borgir, so if you're a fan of them, (I am) then you'll love this. Dragonlord does make an honest effort and it shows on tracks like "Revelations", but some songs can be a bit overdone in the vein of recent Dimmu-Borgir releases. The keyboards are a nice addition but they are rare and don't really push through like they do with - again - Dimmu. I compare Dragonlord to Dimmu so much because their styles are done so similarly (they even have some clean vocal parts which reminded me so much of the use of Vortex in Dimmu-Borgir it wasn't funny). A great album, none-the-less and worth the money for fans of more progressive black metal. The only reason this isn't 5 stars is because a lot of the album has been heard before, however, music like this is rare and hard to find among all the metal there is out there. I hope they continue to release more albums in the future as I'd love to see this band become a crowd bringer. With a little bit more ingenuity Dragonlord could easily become a must pre-order band. I hope this review aided in your purchase!
