5.0 out of 5 stars PURE GENIUS, April 4, 2002
This review is from: Black Winter Day (Audio CD)
Any true Amorphis fan must own this cd. Yeah i don't like paying money for 4 songs but these 4 songs are amazing. Black Winter Day is from Tales from 1000 lakes. Folk of the North is a beautiful instrumental and Moon and the Sun parts 1 and 2 both demonstrate the great writing talent that Amorphis possess. This album is like a mellow version of Tales from 1000 lakes. I suggest this to anyone who appreciates brilliant music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money, July 22, 2000
This review is from: Black Winter Day (Audio CD)
I am not a huge fan of EP's. Lets face it, who likes paying $... for 4 or 5 songs? But let me tell you, this is worth it. After hearing Tales... and Elegy, and falling in love with them, I took a chance on this EP. I love all the songs on it. All these songs were performed during the Tales... sessions. If you thought Tales... lacked some keyboards then you need to get this. These songs are definitely not lacking in the keyboard department. For any diehard Amorphis fan or a fan of good solid death metal.

For me, _Tales from the Thousand Lakes_ was the best Amorphis album. Not as epic as Elegy, but it was as thoughtful, with the most dense, heavy, and rich texture they have ever achieved.

The Black Winter Day EP contains songs written during that time. These songs are even more focused on the feel of the folk tales. The keyboard work on these songs is as central to these songs as it is on Black Winter Day (the song).

I usually hate keyboards, but the keyboard/moog parts are especially effective in these songs and blend as well with the guitars as the guitar leads do.

Basically, this is more from the keyboard-driven side of _Thousand Lakes_.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for any Amorphis fan, June 2, 2001
This review is from: Black Winter Day (Audio CD)
This EP features one song ("Black Winter Day") pulled from their previous effort, "Tales From the Thousand Lakes" and a few tracks left from that recording session. The best song is the grinding yet mellow "Moon and Sun Part II: North's Sun," their best song on any recording!

If you are a fan of "Tales From the Thousand Lakes," or atmospheric death metal in general, this must be included in your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Band from the North, May 8, 2001

This review is from: Black Winter Day [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
Amorphis, from the small country of Finnland. Formed in the early 90's, this band continued to blow away death metal bands in the US. Using 70's melodies, Finnish folk music, power death metal guitars, Death and Normal vocals. Amorphis is the best band i ever heard, not just say that becuase I'm Finnish, but I been following these guys since "Tales From The Thousand Lakes." This CD is a MUST for any death metal lover. Also, if you like this one, get the rest of the CD's
