I found this book extemely easy to follow and full of what turns out, in retrospect, to be common sense. It's always easy to say "I knew that" when someone else has taken the time to organize and present the material for you. However unfair that's what you start thinking as you go through the book. Yes, I have been told a million times that heat is not good for your hair. The author stresses this as well but does give some great alternatives to applying heat and still looking presentable. Unfortunately if you are on the go/busy a lot this book will be hard for you to do although with some thought you can manage to get by on some of the steps. While the author does go through some pains to mention specific products (something woefully lacking in most hair care books) you can tell it is somewhat dated. Unfortunately the book was written 2 years ago and a lot of new products are out there. So take the time to read what the author is saying a particular product will do for you and look for your own brand that achieves the same results. There is an excellent index in the back of the book of all the recommended products. The only major drawback to this book has to do with those of us with NATURAL/CHEMICAL FREE HAIR. While she does make reference to natural hair care in particular sections this book is basically for the black woman with chemically treated hair. All too often she forgets about the differences and the fact that you just can't use the same technique on relaxed and natural hair.

I received this book in Sept. of 2000 and began to use the regimen right away. Since then, ny hair has been soft, manageable, and MOVES when I MOVE. I liked that the author recommends specific products and tells us what to do with them. Other hair care books that I've read only mention general product information and leave us to haunt the hair care aisles alone. My hair has always been a nice length, but I have never been able to grow it past my shoulder blades. Since starting this regimen, it has grown about an inch and a half with minimal split ends! I am especially impressed with my hair's manageability. Even when it's windy, my hair falls back into place when I step inside, without hair spray. I have never had these results before, and can only attribute them to this hair-care regimen. The initial cost of starting the regimen was high for me; I was clueless and didn't have many of the products already on hand. I spent around $50-$60 on my initial visit, and later went back for optional items. I will never regret the costs, though; I can't get away from the mirror! If you follow this regimen's instructions carefully, I believe that you can't go wrong. I am 28 years old, and my hair has never been so long and healthy! I believe it will grow until I'm disgusted with it's length! Another thing is that I can let it dry naturally now, so I spend less time on it than I ever did when it was dry and frizzy. The only thing that keeps me from giving this book a "5" rating is the insufficient number of pictures in the hair-styling chapter. Some of the instructions are difficult to envision without them. Anyway, if you have relaxed hair, I suggest you give this book a try; I was so amazed that the claims were true!

I could not believe my eyes. Carolyn Gray did some excellent research to write this book. However, I think she recommends waytoo many products to purchase. I am not really stressing about the lenghth of my hair. I just want my shoulder length hair to look healthy. Now it does. I bought a couple of the products that she recommended. They worked wonders on my hair. I get so many compliments on my hair daily. It looks healthier than it ever has, my hair has never had so much body and shine! To top it off I didn't spend one second in a beauty shop! I work out daily and she has taught me how to keep my hair looking great even through my sweaty workouts. I don't feel pressured to wear braids and hair extensions. I would recommend this book for all African American ladies who want healthy hair. This book is soo easy to read. It's really a manual. So I took it with me to the beauty supply store. Definatley, a keeper.

I just finished week 2 and I am extremely impressed by the restored health of my hair so soon. Along with easy to follow step-by-step instructions, the overall information was invaluable as well as a blessing.I never knew how bad my stylist and I was damaging my hair until I started your 6-week regimen. I thought my very thick, shoulder length hair was just shedding naturally, now I see and know the difference between breakage and shedding. Who knew I could actually have free flowing shiny manageable hair without blow-drying and hot curling each week. I was skeptical with the long list of products, but looking at it as an investment with long-term benefits, I found that your product recommendations and the Caruso rollers are genius! Thanks Ms. Gray for all the hard work and effort you endured to share this wonderful knowledge with the rest of us. I look forward to seeing continued fantastic results. I will tell everyone I can about your book and show them the difference!

The author is really into her hair and I can respect that. I bought this book a week ago and tried the Week 1 last weekend. I followed all the steps and my hair really came out pretty nice. It was very soft and I had very very little shedding. I must admit I only bought week 1's products and actually already had 2 of the conditions at home. I spent about $30.00 at the beauty supply store. That is probably the most you will spend because many of the products are used over again. I have especially dry hair but it is long and split ends are my nemesis, so I was willing to try anything. The "night oil" is really great, definetly get that. Although I must admit the book is a bit pricey but it's a pretty easy read. The author does not claim to be a licensed beautician just knows all this by talking to others and her own trial and error. I'm going to try it for the next 5 weeks so we will see. But as for now my hair feels really good and I'm pretty glad I bought the book.

I purchased this book with reservations. I have the most unmanagable, hair. After following Ms. Gray's regime, my hair has grown 1.5 inches and is healthier than it's ever been! I followed her recommendations, letting my hair (I have relaxed hair) air dry after shampooing and conditioning. It comes out much straighter, compared to blow-drying, which makes my hair frizzy. Even a miminal amount of heat applied take to my hair causes my hair to break off. One of my friends is following the regime with me. She's noticed great improvement in the condition of her hair too! I would highly recommend Ms. Gray's book to anyone who's trying to achieve healthy hair and added length. The regime is so easy to follow!

This book is very helpful if you are looking for a way to improve the condition of your hair! Especially when it is chemically relaxed. I love the step by step process, clear instructions & the photos given by the author. It is as though she is talking directly to you. I do wish that their was more information based on the scientific structure of "our" hair as well as more nutritional information. I do appreciate her suggestions on which products to use, although it seems as though there can be too many to use at one time. I am glad she stresses substitutions and modifications to your regimen which is what I have done. I love the note page she has provided for her readers. I have gone through 5 weeks with this book and my hair does seem to be softer and more maneageble and now I know what I can do with my hair when it is almost time for my next touch up thanks to the illustrations. I have emailed Carolyn numerous times and she is very responsive and continues to give great advice! I keep this book close by when I go through my weekly regimen. Get this book...You will definitely appreciate it as much as I do!

I purchased this book a few weeks before I had surgery. I had surgery just at the time I needed a touch-up. When I need a touch-up, there is no avoiding it. However, at the time, it was impossible to see a hair dresser. The day before surgery, my hair was braided. I was not able to get a touch-up for another five weeks. When I was finally able to visit my hair salon, I was prepared for the worst. The only complaint my stylist had for me was that I needed " a little trim at the ends". NO BREAKAGE! and it was "in good condition". Even on the best of occasions I never heard him say that. He has since been continually impressed. It took almost 10 years for me to hear him say that. I have recommended this book to a few people including my sister who has the same type of hair (coarse, very dry, etc). Her stylist has also stated that her hair is good condition. I purchased this book almost a year ago and feel this is the best investment I've made. Take if from someone who used to spend thousands (yes, thousands) of dollars for her hair each year.

I was sceptical at first when I saw the long list of products to buy. After the fist week, I saw a major difference in my hair. Its still breaking a little, but that's understandable for how bad a state my hair was in. I am glad she wrote a book like this. I was beginning to think I would have to walk around bald the rest of my life. I cut off some of the damaged hair and at work today people actually complemented me on how much better my hair looks.

My Hair Is Beautiful Now!,

This review is from: The Black Woman's Guide to Beautiful, Healthier Hair in 6 Weeks! (Spiral-bound)
No, I don't have a weave! I am using her book, and now my hair is healthier and longer. I actually enjoy her methods, because I don't have to worry about blow drying my hair. I am a ballet dancer, and I have abused gel, to keep my hair in a bun. With suggestions in her book, I have found other alternatives, and have not used hairsprays or gels, since I first read her book. My scalp used to flake horribly. Not anymore! If you think the book is too complicated, make your own outline. I added tabs, so that the information would be more readily available. It's well worth the time and effort, if you care about improving the condition of your hair. |
