Book Description

December 1, 2005
This timely, up-to-date guide addresses the unique economic and social issues of black women while showing them why and how to breastfeed their children.

African American infants are twice as likely to die before their first birthdays as white infants, have the highest rate of asthma of any race and have a 35 percent higher prevalence of childhood obesity than white children. African American women are 2.2 times more likely to die from breast cancer and 30 percent more likely to die from ovarian cancer than white women.

All of these health crises can be remedied to some degree with breastfeeding, but virtually all breastfeeding literature on the market fails to speak to the financial, educational and cultural realities of many African American women. The Black Woman's Guide to Breastfeeding addresses the importance of breastfeeding in the African American community and provides all the practical advice African American mothers need to succeed at breastfeeding.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Definitive Resource, July 12, 2006
By
This review is from: The Black Woman's Guide to Breastfeeding (Paperback)
This "must-have" manual for anyone considering or committed to breastfeeding is recommended for mothers, friends and family members, and community organizations, hospitals, and government agencies who interact with pregnant women and new moms. Well written and easy to understand, Ms. Barber's book is a culturally relevant how-to guide that offers information, resources, and encouragement to do one of the most natural, nurturing acts between a mother and her child. Far from preachy or pushy, Ms. Barber gently gives useful tips, real-life scenarios, and even a history about breastfeeding, particularly in the African-American community. A great baby shower present!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely vital perspective, June 16, 2010

This review is from: The Black Woman's Guide to Breastfeeding (Paperback)
Finally...it is about time someone wrote about breastfeeding in a way that attempts to support black women especially. Every group has its own challenges when it comes to breastfeeding. We all need to hear messages of support that are made to help us face the specific issues that arise in our communities and our families. To the reviewer that gave this book a poor review without even reading it, please go elsewhere and spend your time on something else.

This review is from: The Black Woman's Guide to Breastfeeding (Paperback)
When writing my book,[...] I was dismayed to see how few books there were that addressed issues Black women face when breastfeeding. There is overwhelming evidence that shows the lack of support Black women receive when it to breastfeeding. Ms. Barber's guide is timely, effective, and most of all tailored to meet the needs of the African-American community.
