Book Description

September 1994 Blacks in the Diaspora
Winner of the Dartmouth Medal for Outstanding Reference Publication of 1994, the first edition of Black Women in America broke ground - pulling together for the first time all of the research in this vast but underrepresented field to provide one of the strongest building blocks of Black Women's Studies. Hailed by Eric Foner of Columbia University (for a Lingua Franca survey) as "one of those publishing events which changes the way we look at a field," it simultaneously filled a void in the literature and sparked new research and concepts regarding African American women in history.

Since the first edition was published, a new generation of American black women has flourished, demanding this landmark reference be brought up to date. Women such as Venus and Serena Williams, Condoleezza Rice, Carol Mosley-Braun, Ruth Simmons, and Ann Fudge have become household names for their remarkable contributions to sports, politics, academia, and business. In three magnificent volumes, Black Women in America, Second Edition celebrates the remarkable achievements of black women throughout history, highlights their ongoing contributions in America today, and covers the new research the first edition helped to generate.

* Includes more than 150 new entries, plus revisions and updates to all previous entries

Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Originally released in a much more expensive hardcover edition (LJ 2/15/93), this is an extremely useful guide to both the history and current status of African American women. The majority of the entries are biographical; organizations, movements, and the place of black women in the arts, literature, and various professions are also thoroughly discussed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Resource for Libraries and Living Rooms July 29, 2005
Format:Hardcover
Black Women in America is the most authoritative resource for African-American Women's History on the market. Published by England's Oxford University Press, it explores the historical contributions of Black women to American life. The 3 volume set is enormous in scope, yet is presented in well illustrated compact volumes. Biographies and critical essays illuminate the past from America's Revolutionary War Era to the present. Black Women in America is an inspiring resource for libraries and living rooms. This well researched encyclopedia set reminds us of the noble ideals that make America great.

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Disappointed February 27, 2011
By sivy
Format:Paperback
I a relative and descendent to Sarah Parker Remond am truly disappointed in the information listed. Still researching my family history cannot begin to tell you how I was utterly dumbfounded when I read she was primarily self-taught. Actually, she was educated formally, yet her family abolitionists and outspoken business owners in protest left their lucrative business and moved to RI where segregation was not the case and she was educated their until the laws where changed in Massachusetts, where she was born.
She later was educated in Italy and received a degree to become a medical doctor. Yes, you are correct she married and never returned.
