I wanted this book to be full of scientific, hair care industry and even home remedies regarding "how not to lose your hair". Especially since most black women have super curly hair which is rather fragile which most can attest to because it's hard for a lot of us to grow it past our shoulders without getting that broken off look. Unfortunately, you only get part of this in the book. Barry opted to have different people contribute to the book and so you get different points of view regarding hair in each chapter. For instance he lets a reverend write one chapter who goes off on a tangent about his particular religious beliefs and hair care. You know, the whole thing about cutting or not cutting your hair, etc. Anyway it seemed woefully out of place given the title of the book. Barry then has a major chapter devoted to the selling of his own hair care line. But neglects to give full ingredients list for these products. I felt quite annoyed at the number of pages taken up for his marketing campaign since that's not what I thought I was paying for when getting this book. There are some rather informative chapters regarding possible hair loss due to disease such as cancer. He also has about 5 good pages devoted to hair care in shampooing tips and styling options to avoid hair breakage. I had hoped that more of the 180 or so pages would be devoted to these topics. There aren't many pics but there is a beautiful color section that discusses of all things, why some women will only let a man style their hair. What has that got to do with anyting? There is way too much "other stuff" in this book. I gave it at least two stars because Barry does discusses the various ways women can lose their hair. It's just so disappointing that not much was forthcoming on how to stop losing our hair.

I've had this book for quite some time. I have mixed reviews about it. For the most part it is helpful, because other people have contributed this book. Some were people who have had good or bad hair experiences and are starting over. Barry Fletcher's book or input wasn't helpful and to make matters worse, he also tries to promote his own hair products. He tells you how to style hair, dispells the myths about hair coloring, etc., but doesn't tell you how to stop the hair loss. There are hair disorders but doesn't tell you what to do about it except Rogaine and to see a dermatologist. There is also a chapter where this minister writes that a woman should keep her hair long (doesn't like short hair), which makes her feminine but dying her hair blond makes her look cheap. Barry should've kept this chapter out and this minister should've kept that to himself because he sounded sexist.Altogether, I wish I found a better book than this one to promote hair growth

I found this book to be a waste of my money. I was extremely disappointed and returned the book. The format of the book was unorganized and did not provide me any useful information. Save your money.

For this book to cost so much, I would have thought it would be more useful. The book had alot of fluff and fillers, but not enough substantial information on how to inprove the condition of breaking hair. I read Shamboosie's beautiful black hair. I would recommend that instead, it costs way less, plus it offers great suggestions on what to do and what products to use to improve breaking hair.

I thought that the book was unorganized. The articles were written by various people, some with no actual hair care knowledge. It was not as practical as I thought it would be. It seemed to be filled with a lot of information but a great majority did not seem applicable to someone just trying to maintain healthy hair. Most of the articles seemed irrelevant.

Hair Excitement!!!!,

Finally, Barry has come to the rescue of hair care again. I was totally in the dark on how to care for my hair for so long, and until recently didn't have healthy hair. Barry's book teaches, justifies, and illustrates how we are damaging our hair. With the misconceptions that we have been plagued by for so long, it definitely provides a clear understanding of why we used the methods that we used, how it was ineffective, even when it appeared to be effective, and what we can do about it now. For example, I was the "over the counter" no-lye hair relaxer system queen for years, and still know people who use them. Most of you could agree that for so long we were taught to use no-lye...WHAT A MISTAKE!!!!! Until I read Barry's book, I didn't understand how a no-lye relaxer could actually be more damaging to the hair than one containing lye, I definitely understand now. I appreciate Barry's thoroughness in the support that he used when writing this book, he is supported with the opinions, and expert knowledge of other hair care professionals, and physicians. Without giving away the content of this book, I will definitely agree that it answers questions that we are sometimes afraid or embarrassed to ask our stylist; it provides information on all hair types, how our health & diet affect our hair, scalp disease ( and the options we have for remedy), at-home hair care methods & suggestive products to use, etc. I give great thanks for now having a guide to help me understand how I damaged my hair and what I need to do to maintain its healthy state. It's great to have someone to ask what can we do with our hair, it's even better to have it illustrated, and show proof positive. It's a great reference. Barry shows us, and educates us on how and why we should be exicited about our hair, regardless of it's type. It's a must have in the year of our health conscious, importance of appearance, and the overall exitement and energy that we display as African American women! Ladies Order Now!!!

If you are buying this book looking for information on how to take care of your hair you will be somewhat dissappointed. First, Mr. Fletcher didn't write the entire book. His comments are excellent and make up the heart of the book but there isn't enough of Fletcher In between his chapters are guest essays that range containing useful information like the nutritional needs of hair to useless personal memoirs such as one woman's disastous visit to a hole in the wall salon. The pictures are mostly black and whtite and are not as clear as they should be. Instructions are not always clear and too much is left unsaid. Frankly I'm sorry I spent the money on this.

I bought this book from the man himself. Not only is he arrogant, but his book made proposterous suggestions (standing on ones head to grow hair) and not enough information about how to grow hair. Save your money and buy No Lye: The African American Woman's Guide To Natural Hair Care by Tulani Kinard instead.

I found that this book didn't get into too much details into the ways black women could prevent their hair falling out. The book focused more on case studies instead of answering the question of 'Why Black Women are Losing their Hair'. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who wanted to find out ways to stop their hair from falling out.
