WD Black²
Features

Shift_Technology - WD Black² Shift_Technology is race-ready from the starting line with enhanced firmware and improved algorithms for faster performance and data management.

WD Black² Shift_Technology allows you to migrate larger data files to the hard drive and provides your SSD with less system drag, which increases the overall endurance and mileage of the SSD. With less caching involved, there's less time waiting and more time enjoying the things you love to do most.

Shift_Technology Features include:

  • 20nm architecture with quad channel NAND processing for increased speed and performance
  • WD customized controller built for increased efficiency of data management per cell resulting in less drag on your PC
  • Improved drive integrity with 8 GB of space for provisioning to help protect and improve SSD reliability

Reduce SSD wear and tear - SSD performance can degrade when total capacities are reached or after a finite number of writes have been reached, which is a major concern for SSD users. We built our dual drive solution to curb these problems. With our WD Black², you can move your larger data or write-intensive applications onto the 1 TB hard drive, ultimately extending the life of the SSD and maintaining optimal performance across the dual drive.

For the Creative Pro - Now you can load your OS, photo and video editing programs on the SSD and save all of your capacity-heavy RAW photo and video files to the 1 TB HDD. Keep it all local and readily available on your notebook or all-in-one PC without slowing system performance.

For the Gamer inside you - Turn your dual-purpose notebook or all-in-one PC into the high-performance gaming machine of your dreams. The dual drive's fully accessible SSD allows you to place your OS and favorite game software directly on the SSD which results in faster boot times and smoother game play while still having separate storage capacity available for your work and personal files..

Finesse of perfection - WD Black² combines the shock and vibration resistance of SSD with the proven technology of the HDD for one truly agile and highly reliable dual drive storage solution. Advanced firmware and intelligent algorithms assist in heightened performance, resulting in cooler temperatures with nearly inaudible operation.

You take the control - With WD Black² the decision is yours. Safer than using an SSD as your only primary storage device, now you are enabled to save your data on the 1 TB hard drive, or split data between both. Take full control and manage the location of your personal data. We recommend viewing the installation videos to understand the best option for your upgrade, whether it be clean installation, cloning or data migration.

Software Download Required - WD Black² Dual Drive ships as a full kit with a web key, quick install guide, USB to SATA transfer cable, and warranty information. Software download and internet connection are required for installation. Please watch our how to install videos and choose whether you would like to perform a fresh installation or a cloning installation for your dual drive.

Customer Reviews

I had absolutely no problems setting this drive up, it has been working great and very fast.
Amazon Customer
As I understand it the WD partition software is needed to see the hard drive portion and that is not available until windows is already running.
Stephanie Sullivan
Even though the SSD portion of this drive is not as fast as some SSD's, this is still a very good SSD.

The WD Black2 dual drive is an interesting take on mating a traditional rotating hard drive with a smallish SSD in a single 2.5 inch format non-hybrid configuration. This is a somewhat common solution in Desktops using separate drives which is not practical for most laptop computers.

Hybrid drives like the Seagate 1TB ST1000LM014 appear to be one drive to the system and place frequently used files on the SSD portion automagically. The SSD portion of these drives is usually quite small, but often pretty effective for most users.

The WD Black2 is not like a hybrid. It shows up as two hard drives: a 120GB SSD and a 1TB standard platter drive. Note that the 1TB hard drive does NOT show up until special WD drivers are installed/loaded. The 1TB drive is NOT visible to the BIOS.

The idea is to put your operating system and applications onto the SSD where everything will load quickly. Then the 1TB drive should be used for bulk data and potentially a lot of it - up to 1TB. This requires some discipline on the user's part as one must remember to use the "D" drive for their data and/or setup their windows account to put their "my documents", "videos", "music" and "pictures" on the larger drive. The WD site has some good videos that should help most people relocate these data folders from their usual location on the C: drive. If this is not done the smallish 120GB SSD can start filling up pretty quick. This is the kind of arrangement that will work well for only a subset of PC users.

Verified Purchase
After reading a review stating the drive is "Disposable" and "Not ready for prime time", I felt I should clear some things up. There is nothing wrong with the drive. Mine is installed on my Lenovo Y510P and running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 like a champ.

HOWEVER, I did end up having to return my first one for another one due to what I would call poor documentation and/or software

The problem is that this drive isn't really 2 drives... as far as Windows is concerned. It's 1 drive with 2 types of memory. Windows doesn't distinguish the SSD memory as 1 drive and the mechanical as another drive.

This is why the drive ships with the mechanical 1TB essentially "turned off". This allows you to install Windows on the SSD, or clone your current OS to the SSD, then once Windows is installed you can run the WD software to "turn on" the mechanical 1TB.

The thing that needs to be fixed is that there should be some kind of BIG POP UP WARNING when you run the WD software to get the 1TB up and running. The warning should read "WARNING: BEFORE DOING A RE-INSTALL OF WINDOWS BE SURE TO RUN THIS SOFTWARE AGAIN TO UNINSTALL AND RETURN DRIVE TO FACTORY STATE!!!". Or something along those lines.

I was not aware of this... So, this is what happened.

1. Physically installed drive.
2. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 from USB stick on SSD.
3. Ran WD software to make the 1TB mechanical active and drive D.
4. Found all updated drivers for my laptop.
5. Decided to do a final clean re-install of Windows.
6. Deleted all partitions during Windows installation.
7. After Windows was done installing again, I realized I had screwed myself and was now stuck with the drive forever seeing itself as a singular 1.12 TB drive.....

I just installed this dual drive in my media center PC (I got it from another vendor --- sorry Amazon). WD encourages refreshing your operating system when installing this drive, especially if the amount of your data exceeds the capacity of the SSD, and that only makes sense. However, I had just done a clean install of Windows 7 64-bit on my system so it wasn't necessary. My computer specs are an Intel i5 Core i3 3220 on a Gigabyte H61M-USB3H Board with 8GB of G.Skill 1333 RAM and Intel HD 2500 graphics. The motherboard is SATA2 capable, and the SSD I tested against is a Plextor 128GB.
I followed the included instructions to the letter to set up the drive, which is a simple matter of inserting a key-like device in a USB port and downloading Acronis software (for the cloning) and WD software (to partition the drive, necessary or you won't have access to the full capacity). I didn't find one important step mentioned in the instructions: after connecting the WD drive to the computer you need to go into computer management and initialize it or the Acronis software won't be able to see it; I couldn't find that in the booklet although it's discussed on the WD site.
After initializing the drive the cloning process went without a hitch, as did partitioning the drive with the WD software, and then all I needed to do was physically swap the drives. When everything was set up I ran a free program called AS SSD to benchmark the new WD drive and compared it to my Plextor SSD. Read times are where SSDs really shine, and the WD sequential read time was 255 compared to the Plextor's 253, pretty much a dead heat. The Plextor was faster with sequential write times though, 196 vs. 137 on the WD.
