Enjoy all the communication and connectivity features you've come to expect from a BlackBerry phone--including email served up by the BlackBerry Internet Service and a full menu of messaging options (SMS, MMS, and IM)--in a new clamshell form factor. The BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 for Verizon Wireless features the SureType hybrid alpha-numeric/QWERTY keyboard found on BlackBerry Pearl phones, which makes typing messages and dialing numbers fast and easy. And it also offers two high-resolution color displays, including an external LCD that lets you preview incoming messages without opening the handset.

The BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 combines an industry-leading mobile e-mail and messaging solution with the high-speed connectivity of Verizon Wireless’ broadband network in a popular flip design (see a larger image with a schematic of all the controls).
It's compatible with Verizon's V Cast Music Service, which enables you to purchase songs through your phone and download them via Verizon's fast 3G EV-DO data network. You'll also stay on course thanks to the VZ Navigator GPS turn-by-turn direction service. And with the optional Visual Voice Mail service, you'll be able to quickly and easily scroll through your messages and pick the ones you want to listen to. Other features include a 2-megapixel camera with video capture, Bluetooth for handsfree devices and stereo music streaming, MicroSD memory expansion (up to 16 GB), and up to 3.7 hours of talk time.

Verizon Wireless Service
With support for the EV-DO high-speed data standard, you'll enjoy fast access to the Internet and Verizon Wireless multimedia services (additional charges applicable), with average download speeds ranging from 400 to 700 Kbps and peak rates up to 2 Mbps. (Learn more about where EV-DO coverage is offered.)

With this GPS-enabled phone, you'll be able to access the Verizon Wireless VZ Navigator service (additional charges applicable) for voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions, heads-up alerts, local search of nearly 14 million points of interest in the US (such as landmarks, restaurants and ATMs), and detailed color maps. And the Chaperone service lets you easily locate your loved ones from your Verizon Wireless phone or PC in real time. After defining a zone, such as an area designating a school or summer camp, you'll be sent an alert via text message when the Chaperone handset enters or leaves the zone.

Enjoy easy mobile access to Facebook, MySpace and Flickr, as well as popular instant messaging services.
With Visual Voice Mail (subscription required), you can delete, reply and forward voice mail messages without having to listen to prior messages or voice instructions. Visual Voice Mail is the ideal tool for the busy mobile professional who may need to prioritize which messages he or she listens to first. Features include on-screen access to voice mail message status, save up to 40 messages for 40 days (or archive permanently), create up to 10 different caller ID-based greetings, and reply via call back, text or even voice mail.

The Mobile Broadband Connect service (subscription required) enables you to use your smartphone as a modem for your notebook when you connect the two using a USB cable--or open a Bluetooth connection--enabling you to access the Internet or your company intranet. The tethered modem capability is ideal when you're traveling and need to use your notebook to check email, access corporate networks, or download large files like presentations and reports. And with Mobile Broadband Connect, you won't have to buy an extra PC Card or other devices.

Phone Features
The BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 presents a sophisticated look with a sleek design and a chrome-finished frame surrounding its smooth, luminescent face. Weighing 3.6 ounces, the Flip has two light-sensing LCD screens--an internal 2.4-inch 65K-color screen (240 x 320-pixel resolution) and an external 65K-color screen with a 128 x 160-pixel resolution. The external LCD makes it easy to preview incoming emails, text messages and phone calls without opening the handset. It can also display currently playing music track information, and the screen darkens after a pre-assigned time-out duration. The phone has an internal 128 MB memory, which can be expanded via MicroSD/MicroSDHC memory cards up to 16 GB in size.

Opening up the clamshell reveals the Pearl Flip's unique alpha-numeric keypad, which has been brough over from BlackBerry's popular Pearl models. Each button on the keypad shares two letters and the unit automatically determines which letter is the intended one based on what it predicts you are trying to spell. This unique predictive text technology, known as SureType, makes the Pearl Flip's diminutive size possible. SureType also learns the words you use most often, further enhancing your typing speed.

With BlackBerry push technology, you don't need to retrieve your e-mail. BlackBerry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be discreetly notified as new e-mail arrives. Support is also built-in for viewing e-mail attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, and PDF formats).

You'll be able to easily access up to 10 supported personal and work email accounts, send and receive text and instant messages, and connect on popular social networking sites with friends, family and co-workers. The Pearl Flip is supported on BlackBerry Internet Service, BlackBerry Unite!, BlackBerry Professional Software and BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which provides tight integration with corporate email systems.

Surf the Internet with the BlackBerry Browser, which includes a "Page View" option that displays a full web page on the screen along with a magnifying glass that allows the user to quickly and accurately point and zoom in on a specific area of the web page. It also provides quicker access to Bookmarks and History.

Other features include Bluetooth stereo music streaming, multi-format digital audio player, and MicroSD memory expansion to 16 GB.
This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity, and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, audio/video remote control, and sending of vCard calendar and contact info. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. With Voice Activated Dialing (VAD), you just say the word and the 8120 can initiate a call with anyone in your contact list. Plus, you can use VAD along with the built-in speakerphone or with a Bluetooth headset for hands-free dialing.

With an advanced media player for displaying pictures, listening to music and watching videos, the Flip is the perfect on-the-go entertainment center. Videos play smoothly on the large internal display, playlists can be managed directly on the handset, and there's an equalizer with 11 preset filters.

The 2-megapixel camera features a 5x digital zoom and flash as well as your choice of three picture sizes and qualities and white balance settings. You can also capture video clips in two formats--normal and small for sending via MMS.

Other features include:

  • Support for BlackBerry App World, featuring a broad and growing catalog of third-party mobile applications developed specifically for the BlackBerry Pearl Flip. Categories include games, entertainment, social networking and sharing, news and weather, productivity and much more.
  • Easy mobile access to Facebook, MySpace and Flickr, as well as popular instant messaging services (e.g. Yahoo! IM, AIM, Google Talk and Windows Live Messenger)
  • BlackBerry Media Sync allows for easy syncing of music collections to the BlackBerry Pearl Flip (certain music files may not be supported, including files that contain digital rights management technologies)

1.0 out of 5 stars The WORST PHONE one could buy February 2, 2011
This phone is complete garbage, plain and simple. I am on my 3rd replacement. During the day an hour glass will come up on the screen and stay there for an hour. You can't make calls or answer calls. The message for voice mail and texts just disappeared, literally. It isn't something I did or hid. I went to text support, and they said that it sometimes happens. Verizon told me to download the blackberry software which is pure crap. It doesn't do anything like Apple's Itunes does for Ipods or Iphones. The screen constantly just goes blank. I would be better off getting a sting with a tin can attatched to it when I got to make a phone call. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! Listen to somebody that has had to put up with this piece of garbage for over a year now. These good reviews must have just bought their phone. Give it 1 month and all hell breaks lose with this piece of garbage.

4.0 out of 5 stars About time phones got smaller again! June 18, 2010
By TWS
Blackberries are great phones, but they're too big! The Pearl flip is the smallest smart phone I've found that's able to sync up with my MS Outlook at work. I was a little worried about the lack of a full QWERTY keyboard, but after three days of practice, I don't even notice. Texting, internet, everything works fine AND, when it's time to make a call, nice big buttons that you can dial while driving without putting those around you at risk.

This is not a good phone for you if you're the type that's on the internet a lot, sending a ton of emails, etc. However, if you want a small convenient phone with all your contacts and schedule from work and still primary purpose is a phone, then this is the one for you.

Hurry though. I was told by Verizon that they're phasing these out.

1.0 out of 5 stars minus zero lemon flip phone October 16, 2010
This is the worst Verizon Blackberry phone EVER!!! I am on my 4th "replacement" - which is an insult to the intelligence of all consumers in the universe. This phone starts and shuts off anytime day or night. It hangs up on calls. It does not work consistently for one single 24 hour period. Verizon has the audacity to zombishly repeat their "policy" that they will replace the same model phone...Am I insane or has the world gone insane? Why would I repeatedly get the same model anything that continuously fail to deliver its intended purpose. To make matters worse I am a healthcare provider and this phone has completely shut off during my on-call hours...unconscionable a my blood pressure goes through the roof when I either call Verizon or go in person to the store and they repeat their moronic scripts that they will only replace it with the same model...or I can pony up hundreds of dollars to either break the contract or buy another model phone...Something must be done about this. The wireless companies are soaking in money and illegally holding us hostage to their endless prison contracts...In the end the customer ALWAYS lose their money, their income when trying to use Verizon cell phones and their dignity by the machine like customer service offered by Verizon...Pity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meets medium expectations February 1, 2010
By M. Ning
I just needed a phone with no bells and whistles, and this met my expectations. I like the texting keyboard and the touch screen, but the contact navigation can be a little bit tedious. There's voice-activated controls, though, so that's a plus. I don't use the data plan, so I have no reviews on the data capabilities of this phone. Reception is good.
