I have purchased Black Kow in BULK direct from the production facility and it is great compost. Well composted, not hot on plants, black, rich, with a little sand added for proper drainage.

I haven't purchased it in the bag form so I can't speak to that, but I know from talking to owners that it is the same product they sell in bulk so the quality should be the same. I see the price is much higher than I paid by buying it in bulk. By purchasing it by the bag, you are paying for advertising, shipping, and packaging.

Black Kow is a great product. We use it in our garden every year, and we have terrific results. Just don't get suckered by online ads that make it seem like it's some kind of exclusive miracle product, or that it's really hard to come by. It's just rotted cow poo. You can find it at your local Lawn and Garden center for 5 bucks a bag.

For sale here is a $4.79 50lb bag of Black Kow compost manure as sold by two huge home improvement stores and one very large super shopping center.

Apparently, this is a very predatory listing where the seller is looking for an uniformed, ignorant buyer. This just goes to show you we all use different moral compasses.

Shameful

I had a very bad experience with Black Kow this year. Bought 2 bags from Lowe's over a month ago (in early May 2015) and planted 9 tomato starts (about 10" tall) stirring a trowel full where each plant was set. Went on a trip and 10 days later I found that all the new growth had come in severely stunted with curled up leaves, flowers and stems. The leaves rolled up from the sides and then rolled up along the stem axis into tiny bright-green fists. No sign of insects and no symptoms of viruses (which take more time and always change the color). All 9 tomato plants exactly the same. My wife used the same compost for various rows of flower seeds and beans, but all of them either failed to sprout or sprouted with distorted leaves. Searching the internet for similar looking tomatoes, the only close match was on plants poisoned with herbicides. (My agriculture extension officer agreed.) It was said that cattle and horses can eat grass from fields treated with herbicides (with little effect on the animals) and pass the poison into the manure which is then poisonous to many plants. Looks like Black Kow was not careful about their manure sources and also failed to treat the compost to detect or remove the herbicides. I know the evidence is only circumstantial but I have LOTS of circumstances that that this is what happened. I pulled all the plants, dug out much of the compost and replanted. It cost me about $100.
