Well done,

With a broad thick tool steel blade the Tatang's toughness and edge retention so far have been impressive. The blade geometry, the ergonomics of the handle, and the balance make this knife formidable as a weapon or tool. Wether intended for self defense or for bush craft, the Tatang thus far has been excellent for me and I would recommend this knife to any blade enthusiast. My one complaint is the sheath. With all the quality and superior design Blackhawk put into this tool I'm not sure why they didn't opt for a more useful sheath. I would like to see a Kydex sheath with Tech lock available for this knife.

more than what it appears,

For fans of non-stainless, carbon steel blades, the Tatang offers more than a well made fighting knife. The blade is made from 1/4" 1085, coated black, with a fully sharpened false edge on its spearpoint blade. It is, as another reviewer stated, also a fine bushcraft knife, and a formidable chopper, comparing favorably to a Becker BK-9. The handle is quite comfortable, and the balance of the knife is superb, feeling light in the hand considering how much steel one is holding. I also agree that a Kydex (or similar) sheath would be a solid plus; the nylon sheath is well done for what it is, yet seems to be little more than someplace to store the knife, and demands that the handle clasp be secured if one is humping through the woods, or the knife could easily fall out. Sensational blade on a well made knife.

This is a great knife. The weight is great, and feels very well balanced. I was not 100% sold on the curved handle, but I actually really like it; it feels very comfortable held either normally or reversed. The one and only thing that kept this knife from getting the perfect rating is the seemingly cheap sheath. For as nice and expensive as the knife is, the sheath is very poorly matched to the quality of the knife. A kydex, quick draw type sheath would be great, but I would have even settled for something that would work with molle gear. Overall still a great knife, with the one disappointment of the sheath being pretty cheap.

Tatang Me, Tatang Me!,

Outstanding weapon! Yep, I said weapon. This aint your momma's pig sticker...If you are in the market for a hip friendly "whiddlin" knife, you may want to purchase something else. You purchase the Tatang with the thought in mind that this knife may just save your life one day. The double edge makes drawback cuts a breeze and the spear point along with the blade thickness (or thinness) will penetrate the heaviest body armor.
Very important note: DO NOT TRY this on your kevlar while wearing your kevlar or you will DIE! The first thing you notice about this knife is the heft without the weight, the quickness and the solid feel that comes from a true full tang. This knife will do exactly what your mind demands long before your hands move! Another couple of truly unique features are the "crooked" handle allowing for a full secure reach for chopping and the finger "choil" for more precise cuts. All in all a very well featured knife/weapon with not only outstanding design for fighting but also an all around camp knife. Alas, there is always something that person can ask for... A top line finger guard would be nice but life goes on without one. Certainly not a deal breaker, not even close! I've sharpened knives to the point of being "scary sharp" for 40 years and consider myself a pro when it comes to fashioning a razorblade out of a bowling ball and for what it's worth, sharpening the Tatang is a bit of a trick. The heavy blade, steep angle of attack on the edge makes for a bit of a challenge to sharpen to a razors edge, but with devotion to the cause and you enjoy a knife that will keep you in good sted for years to come. THE SHEATH! "MAJOR DISSAPOINTMENT" COME ON BLACKHAWK...NYLON? REALLY? WHAT DID THE KYDEX FAIRY DIE? PLEASE RECONSIDER THE SHEATH!!! I had to purchase an aftermarket sheath costing another 50 bucks...A cost I didn't want to take absorb but to carry this knife with confidence, you really need to set the money aside and bite the bullet. It's worth it and I'd do it again. Just wish that Blackhawk would have saved me the money by doing it in the first place... All in all a 5 out of 5; a weapon to cherish for a lifetime and then hand down to your family or friends...They will love you for it! Course you just might want to be buried with it...Up to you!

A sexy piece of steel that will also save your life...,

Pick this knife up and you will see that it means business. The factory nylon sheath is fine and the strap will function if you are a man and not just a review star-killing fairy because you were too weak to set it. Moving forward, what I liked best about this knife is that it's functional aesthetics. Most knives that are meant to function are not pretty, and most knives that are pretty are not made to function. This knife incorporates both attributes. The full tang design ensures strength, integrity, and longevity. The knife allows multiple grip options ranging from reverse grip for combat, standard grip for chopping, and choke-up grip for precision tasks. This is a good looking knife that will be useful in a back country, survival, and self-defense situation. A very well-rounded tool.
The scales are on pretty tightly as opposed to other knife makes that normally would require lock-tite application. The knife features the main edge which is pretty damn sharp out of the box, and a spline-side edge which is just as sharp and maybe just a little less sharp. The knife can be used to thrust and probably for throwing too. I am overall very happy with the versatility of this knife. If you see the pics I posted up, you will notice a tan Kydex sheath that I initially had made for it but sold it shortly after I noticed just how well the factory sheath functioned after all compared to other knife factory sheaths that are utter junk. For $59.96 plain edge model, it's a no-brainer. I've seen this knife sell for about $100 on some online store sites. Happy Hunting! -JT

bomarc43,

I bought one of these knives about a year or so ago,and I couldn't be happier.Great size and blade shape.I love the pistol grip style handle. It is comfortable in forward or reverse grip, and using the finger choil is also comfortable in forward or reverse grip.It gets and holds a great edge. The only things wrong with it was the tip on mine was burred over pretty bad when it arrived like someone stabbed a rock or something with it,but I got that fixed. And it didn't come very sharp.I think they should do a way better job sharpening them.I have no problem with the sheath whatsoever,I never found many nylon sheaths I liked before this one.It is holding up amazingly.I have wore it almost every single day since I got it.I take it in the woods with me I have fell and slid on the sheath and nothing ever went wrong. The only thing that has happened to the sheath so far is while taking the blade in and out its edges have cut both sides of the safety strap a little bit.The knife can go in the sheath for left or right hand carry. The sheath also has holes around the sides for lashing it to MOLLE gear, putting a leg strap on or whatever else you find them useful for.The knife chops very well for its size and weight. The only thing bad about the steel is it will rust fairly easy, just keep it dry and oiled up and it will be fine.I recommend the plain edge version over the serrated version.I got the serrated version for some reason not really sure why,I just did.but both are good.I'm probably going to buy a plain edge version soon.so overall I highly recommend this knife to users and/or collectors. It is a straight up beast. When you look at it it just looks tough(and it is). It looks like a straight up tactical blade and that's that.It truly is an outstanding knife.....LATER!!!

First off, this knife is built for abuse. I'm pretty sure you could use it to pry open wooden crates such without any worry at all. It came very sharp, and it appears to hold its edge well over time. The ergonomics of the handle are also near perfect. The balance is slightly heavy towards the front depending on the grip you take on the knife. My only negative is the terrible sheath it comes with. It has only single stitching, feels pretty cheap, and the restraining strap is next to impossible to close around the knife. I've tossed the sheath in favor of a custom leather sheath I had made.

Closest to Call of Duty Black Ops and MW3 knife,
By
This review is from: Blackhawk Tatang Knife (Misc.)
I saw this knife years ago in a Blackhawk catalog and like it then but I play a lot of Call of Duty video games and this is the closest one there is for real that can be bought. This is an impressive looking knife and the quality from Blackhawk is excellent. I have purchased one of their holsters and a case and you don't get any better. I plan to buy this knife as a Christmas present for myself. Sweet of me isn't it.
