If I had to choose again, I would purchase the Das Keyboard I was considering.

This would be a 5/5 review if I hadn't had the firmware issue.

This review is for the Mac edition of the keyboard.

I had been using a cheaper mechanical keyboard for programming and I was not as satisfied with it as I wanted to be. I did a bunch of research and it looked like the Black Widow would be the best for my needs. Especially with the macro keys. As a programmer I want to be able to bind certain refactoring keystrokes to one key, and having the macro keys to the side of the tab key would be excellent.

The keyboard does not disappoint. Once you use the cherry blue key switches you'll never want to go back. They give great feedback and bounce back quickly. I honestly feel like I type faster using this keyboard. In an unscientific couple of runs through a word per minute test, my speed seemed to have increased by roughly 10 wpm.

I however did have a problem with the firmware. When I got the keyboard and installed the driver software for the Mac I could not bind any of the function keys to a macro. They simply did not work! The macro keys were a big reason why I chose this over something like das keyboard.

I sent an e-mail to technical support and in less than 24 hours I had my problem fixed. It seemed the firmware on the keyboard was out of date. The fix was annoying, but I was very pleased that technical support responded so quickly.

I had to connect it to a windows machine and download the software on there, which then updated the keyboards firmware. I guess the firmware update only works on Windows machines for some reason. But I feel like I shouldn't have had to hook it up to a Windows box to update the firmware.

If you're a looking at the mac edition, beware. You best have a windows box handy for potentially updating the firmware to get certain keys to bind to macros.

Imagine having to check the Razer website every time there is an OSX update to make sure your keyboard software will still work and you won't lose your programming - That's what you'll have to do if you get this keyboard. Read on for more...

I bought this keyboard to help me with my migration from a PC to a Mac Pro. I just can't use the cute white sleek keyboard that comes with the machine, so this seemed like a great solution.

The keyboard, with the included software, is almost completely programmable - Almost every key can be re-assigned to different keystrokes, macros or even mouse events or program launches.

This was great - I could reprogram the Home and End key to do Command-Left and Command-Right so they behave just like on my PC, and adjust a couple of others.

It worked... Until I rebooted.

Every time I reboot, the software completely loses the profile and the keyboard resets back to factory defaults. The profile is completely gone after every reboot - Its not a simple matter of going in, loading the saved profile and off we go - The information is completely GONE. You have to redefine every macro and assignment manually one by one again. This software is supposed to be saving profiles to a cloud storage, its clearly storing them in a puff of smoke that blows away every time you reboot.

I wrote to Razr about this letting them know I have OSX 10.8.1 - They simply responded "We are sorry but the Synapse 2.0 drivers are currently only supported on Mac OS X v10.6 to 10.7" - and they offered no solution or ETA for a fix, or support of any kind. For a $100-plus keyboard, this is unacceptable rubbish customer service.

Update 11/15:
They contacted me about the review and did nothing.

Hi,

Could you please contact us at feedback@razerzone.com ?

We'll work with you to figure out what's wrong. Synapse 2.0 works on Mac OSX 10.8, but this may be an isolated bug.

Keyboard works great on the Windows side, but the Synapse software (what you use to assign keys, set up macros, etc) is absolutely worthless on my Mac. Every time you reboot, the keyboard loses all of it's config settings. Maddeningly, these aren't even the default keyboard setting (eg arrow keys reset to ctrl+right, ctrl+ left, etc) so that you have to manually go through and reassign every key each time you reboot - a major pain.

I traded several emails with Razer's support team explaining my issue in-depth, and their response is worth quoting:

"Thank you for your email. We regret to inform you that at the moment Synapse 2.0 is not supported on Mac OS is 10.8. Unfortunately, Technical support has no information on future driver releases." Translation: we don't care about our Mac customers. After this, I won't be buying any more of their products.

Nice keyboard, BUT for some reason the number "4" key stopped lighting up only a few days after it arrived. Kind of annoying.

I received the product and it was poorly packaged with a single layer of bubble wrap around the center of the keyboard; leaving the corners exposed. I immediately noticed the shift key getting in a stuck down position after being pressed and even the backslash key of the keyboard was inserted backwards. I immediately notified the seller of the defects and stressed my annoyance on how even keys were in backwards making me feel completely ripped off. The seller took advantage of a confusing process/time limit in which to return the product. I am highly dis-satisfied with this seller and strongly recommend going elsewhere for business.

Chase,

These reviews are to represent reviews for the product itself, not the merchants. Although we're very sorry to hear that you had a negative experience buying our product from a merchant on Amazon, this is the wrong forum. You can visit the merchant's profile site and leave feedback on them themselves.

Thanks for understanding.
