Great Find for Military Historians, April 21, 2009
This review is from: Blackbird Resurrection: A Novel Based on the Reactivation of the SR-71, 1994–1998 (Paperback)
Modern History is replete with the stories of weapon platforms that if developed and deployed, could have changed history.
This book recounts one of those instances. The SR71 was a technological wonder. I remember hearing about how this high tech aircraft was designed in such a way that it leaked fuel when on the ground - I thought that was a bad thing. But as this book explains that, and many other design elements, were all a part of the successful deployment of an incredibly effective intelligence gathering vehicle.
The fact that Blackbird was retired at a time of the greatest need - the ongoing gathering of real-time information about terrorist groups - defies common sense. The "what ifs" that the author brings to mind are baffling and begs for an explanation.
But through the approach of using a historic novel, Colonel Reich does just that. The book captures your interest by following the career of a up and coming Air Force Officer - and carries you through the final years of the Blackbirds deployment, retirement and redeployment (and subsequent reretirement).
If you love aviation history, military history and a well written book - you need to sit down and enjoy this one.

The Story Didn't End in 1990..., April 20, 2009
This review is from: Blackbird Resurrection: A Novel Based on the Reactivation of the SR-71, 1994–1998 (Paperback)
The SR-71 story didn't end in 1990. With Congress ordering its reactivation in 1994, this story recounts the facts as experienced by the officers caught between the politicians and a reluctant Air Staff as theater commanders clamor for aircraft deployment. A great study in leadership!
