First-time CD release of this rare 10" LP from a series of RCA studio recreations, contains five superb performances by former Count Basie vocalist Thelma Carpenter, best remembered today as "Miss One" in the 1978 film "The Wiz", plus rare performances by Cab Calloway and Avon Long. Thelma co-starred with Long in the short-lived 1952 Broadway revival of "Shuffle Along," so these count as "cast" recordings as well, plus they are conducted by the show's legendary composer, Eubie Blake, and include a duet by revival cast members Louise Woods and Laurence Watson. There is also a "Blackbirds" number by the legendary Cab Calloway, whose name does not even appear. Carpenter's recordings are few and hard to find, so this is a welcome addition. For those who want more of Thelma, check out "Seems Like Old Times" on Sepia and "Souvenir" on Audiophile. These eight tracks are great, but I took off one star because Sony could have filled it out with other titles from the original RCA series, plus whoever supervised this Sony reissue didn't bother to include correct credit information. What's listed is completely wrong. Here's the proper track listing:

"Blackbirds of 1928" (conducted by Lehman Engel):
I Can't Give You Anything But Love--Cab Calloway
Diga Diga Doo--Thelma Carpenter
I Must Have That Man--Thelma Carpenter
Doin' The New Lowdown--Thelma Carpenter

"Shuffle Along" (conducted by Eubie Blake):
Love Will Find a Way--Louise Woods and Laurence Watson
I'm Just Wild About Harry--Thelma Carpenter and Avon Long
Bandana Days--Avon Long
Gypsy Blues--Thelma Carpenter and Avon Long

Fine service and shipping. The recording is wonderful, but contains only eight selections and that's very disappointing. Paying that much money and not getting enough for the price is disheartening. Other selections could've been added from the same or similar shows.
