Product Description

We find ourselves in an internal debate between the Blackburn AirStik 2Stage and the AirStik SL -- faster pumping or smaller size. If you need it on your bike for a race, do you want to save 26g or have almost twice the air volume per stroke? We go back and forth, but the greater air volume does seem worth the trade-off. The AirStik 2Stage can deliver 3.5 cubic inches of air per stroke, which exceeds most other pumps that offer two different volumes per stroke. If you're not familiar with these, you should be. There is a switch on the pump, in this case on the bottom of the handle, which allows you to choose "high volume" or "high pressure." The latter is a polite way to say "low volume" -- something you will want as the pressure in the tire gets to a certain point as it makes the pumping easier. While the 2Stage is bigger than the SL, it's still pretty small. It is 172mm long when closed and has a 98mm long pump stroke. The barrel and shaft are aluminum. We wonder if one of the things we like about this pump is that Blackburn hired a suspension fork engineer to work on their pump line. The result is mini-pumps that use the shaft space as an air chamber, which makes the pump action more stable and delivers more air per stroke. The Blackburn AirStik 2Stage comes with a mount that fits under a bottle cage. The head is designed for Presta valves only. Maximum pressure possible with the pump is 160psi. While this may not be important to you, Blackburn has made the pump so it can be rebuilt rather than tossed when a part breaks. There is a lifetime warranty on the pump. The pump comes in one color: Black. Claimed weight for the AirStik 2Stage is 84g.Rebuildable so you can keep it clean and working smoothly for life Cage mount included so you can use it out of the box

I purchased my first road bike in 25 years this Summer, and prepared for the inevitable flat by carrying a spare tube, tire irons, and this Blackburn AirStick 2-Stage pump. After 250 miles, there it was...a rear tire causing me to swerve suddenly. Gulp. Will the pump hold up after all?

The short answer is that the 2-stage mechanism really worked. With the pump switch set at "low", I was able to fairly quickly inflate the newly installed tube to full size and reasonable thumb-pressure firmness. This was maybe 60 lbs pressure, and maybe it took 60 strokes. Switching to "high" on the pump end, I tested to see how firm the tire could really get. On this setting, each stroke delivers only a small volume of high pressure air, but it makes a difference. After about another 60 strokes, the tire was quite firm to the touch (and I'm estimating that it resulted at about 100 psi). For getting back on the road, this was fine.

Would I use this as my everyday pump? Of course not. Is it adequate to get you going again? Most definitely.

Obviously, I can't comment on its longevity at this point, but I'm satisfied so far. As to the mounting...the clip mount and elastic closure appear durable enough. The supplied mounting clip fits beneath a water bottle cage's threaded openings, and longer screws are provided. Mine is mounted on the seat tube, away from the drive-train side (left crank), just above the front derailleur moung. I have no problems with rattling or any sense that it could become loose.

It's also compact enough to simply slip into a rear jersey or jacket pocket, if you choose. I wouldn't recommend this pump for larger volume, lower pressure hybrid or knobby tires, as you'd be pumping forever. Buy a larger frame pump for that purpose.

Not expecting a small light weight pump to work like a larger frame or floor pump I am quite pleased with this little AirStik 2. The 2 stage function is very useful, and high pressure pumping is surprisingly doable - knowing ahead of time that it would take many strokes to add a little bit of air.

Overall this is a well built little pump that you can carry in your rear jersey pocket that will save you if all your better plans fall through. I would recommend this pump.

I've had this pump on my bike fore the last 1600 miles. Wasn't sure if it would do the job so I carry a couple CO2 cartridges also. Had a flat this week and decided to see of the pump would do the job without the CO2. After changing tubes the hi/ low function worked great. About 150 pumps (2 minutes) and the tire was fine for the 30 miles remaining.

Small size, light, and decent pressure. I'd recommend.

The descriptive blurb for the Blackburn Airstik 2 Stage Mini Pump claims, "Aluminum barrel and shaft construction make for a feathery 84g weight, and with rebuildable internals, this pump can be repaired if you choose to use it as a riot baton against that charging antelope." Well, this isn't so. It wasn't a charging antelope, but rather a speeding car, and a tire hit my dropped pump before I reclaimed it. Everything was okay, except for a slight dent in the outer aluminum tube. I can't pound it out, so the pump gets jammed with each push. No worries... it was built "with rebuildable internals, this pump can be repaired if you choose." Unfortunately, when I contacted Blackburn, I got back a note that told me "Unfortunately we do not carry the part that you are looking for. I am sorry for the inconvenience." It's the main body!!!

When I pay for quality, I expect quality.

UPDATE! After writing again and expressing my concerns, I was sent a complete, new pump. Now get this... the damage was MY fault. I wanted to BUY a new body. And when Blackburn said it wasn't available, they ended up sending me a NEW pump on their dime.

Yes, I'd say they stand behind their products!

The two stage pump works great. On my second try, I popped the tube by pusing on the stem just a little bit too much. Be very careful

I will update this review if my experience changes but so far I am not pleased with this pump.
Yes, it is beautiful, lightweight and compact, but I think that may be the problem, function follows form in this instance and I have found the function to be, well, not very. First off, according to the directions, the pump relies entirely on the valve stem to locate the head and for you to push against that with the handle, there is only the tiniest place to hold onto the head, and you are very likely to pinch your finger if you are not extremely diligent in watching out for that. I personally have not found a stem stable enough that I would feel comfortable putting all that repeated side-load on. It really doesn't even get past that point for me as every time I attempt to use it I give up and use other means to pressurize the tire. I have as of yet not been stranded with this as my only air source and I fear the day it happens.
