About Blackburn
In 1975, Jim Blackburn set out to design stronger, lighter, more innovative and more reliable cycling products. The first were bags and racks designed for touring. From there, Blackburn grew. Over the next 30 years, Blackburn's spark of innovation would lead to many revolutionary products, like the first high quality aircraft aluminum rack, the first dual stroke minipump, the first oversized mountain minipump and the first dual stage/dual stroke floorpump just to name a few. For 2005, Blackburn's creative spark is burning brighter than ever. And as we head into our 30th year, Blackburn is re-dedicated to designing smart, reliable, no nonsense accessories that are essential to your riding experience.

I agree this seems to be a good and sturdy piece of equipment. But, it arrrived and I found that it's only defect was a pet peeve of mine....not having all the pieces required for assembly. In this instance it was not having all the nuts for each of the screws required for installation. Luckily, I have a big collection of various sized nuts and bolts and I was able to find two nuts to replace those that Blackburn did not include in their parts bag. For those who do not have a collection of nut and bolts in their basement workroom, it would mean a trip to their local hardware store to buy those they needed. I always admire the maufacturers who include a few more of the nuts, bolts, washers, etc needed for assembly. I guess some feel my complaint is picayunish, but to me it really ticks me off to find that the quality control is so poor as not to be sure to include the right number on nuts in the first place.

Blackburn racks are getting harder to find, but they are still at the top of the pile in terms of build quality and strength / weight. I have had Blackburn racks on a couple bikes over the years and never had a complaint. One is still going strong after 20 years. Highly recommended.

This is a very nice black all-aluminum welded rear rack for mountain bikes. Came with everything I needed to fit onto my 21" frame (w/26" tires) Giant Rincon. It is pannier/basket-ready and some nice features include a built-in plate that acts as a splash-guard and an included bracket for mounting a rear light. This thing is nice 'n' light at less than 1.5 lbs is load-rated at around 30 lbs. It carries a life-time warranty.

Heh. I always meant to come back to this with an addendum but forgot. The comment i made about the rack plate acting as a splash-guard turned out to be a bit of wishful thinking. It really doesn't protect your backside from splatters when riding in wet conditions, so keep that in mind. I just throw on a pair of ratty basketball shorts over my pants (or as i refer to it, 'donning my bum-gaiters').

So yeah, full disclosure, you ride around with this rack on a wet NYC day and you're still gonna get gritty road juice on you. That said, 6 years later and it's not rusted and still holds its load, so...cool beans.

I bought this product firstly to battle having a wet butt on my way to work on wet days. It does a pretty fair job of this. Fenders still work better for the task of keeping you dry, but this better fit my needs. The MTN-1 feels very stable thus far. I haven't used it to carry too many things yet, but it handles a milk crate full of heavy groceries with easy.

Mounting the product to my bike was fairly easy. My bicycle was made from the factory with attachment points that all lined up well.

The only thing I wish was different about it is that it would look better if it sat an inch or two higher on my bike frame. I ride an Alpha- Campus with 26 x 2 tires and a 20" frame. It seems that if I wanted to install a rear fender, the fit would be a bit tight.

Overall, a great product!

After using the rack for a short time, I find it sturdy and adequate for my needs, namely short commutes to work. The MTN-2 carries my Timbuk2 Tandem Panniers well with even the largest loads (clothes, laptop, lunch) and after attaching to the frame, feels sturdy.

HOWEVER. While I found the installation process simple overall, the MTN-2 did not come ready to attach to my Giant brand hybrid bike. With the included extender bars (the ones that attach to the braze on mounts under the seat), the rack tipped severely far forward. After further research, I found hybrid bikes often require longer extenders.

I wish someone (ie: Blackburn) would have placed a disclaimer about hybrid bikes and the additional components needed.

As it looked that Blackburn didn't carry longer extenders (after I called customer service), I went with a set from Jandd (one of the only two manufacturers I found selling 12" extenders).

I'm all set now and only time will tell how well the unit holds up!
