I can't believe this is only the 3rd review written on this 2-fer, blast from the past.
So you know, the 'Byrd' part of the name is due to these guys being understudies of the cross-over jazz trumpeter, Donald Byrd. The Blackbyrds take the Donald Byrd direction of the mid seventies and make it chart and ear friendly. As much as I love this stuff, it tends to suffer from that mid to late 70's sound from time to time. The stringy/orchestral bordering on disco sound. That being said, Rock Creek Park and BlackByrd's Theme are 2 of the thickest funk jams I know. They had a limited run, but you need to put these boys in the Kool and the Gang, Tower of Power range without apology.

Both of these great lps are on one cd now. These 1974 releases were back-to-back pure pleasure. The songs are priceless, like "Do it Fluid", "Walking in Rhythm", "Rock Creek Park" (Cobbs Creek, if you're from West PhillY) and so on. Great buy!!
