Book Description

The blackcollars—an elite, genetically enhanced fighting force—may be humanity’s only hope

Decades after a successful invasion of Earth and the Terran Democratic Empire by the Ryqril—hostile, leathery-skinned aliens—resistance fighter Allen Caine is training for an undercover mission. He will assume the identity of an aide to the senate—part of the government that colludes with the invaders. But when the mission begins earlier than planned, Caine finds himself stuck on the off-planet outpost of Plinry with no idea of what awaits. He’s responsible for the most important mission undertaken by the resistance in twenty years, and when the operation goes awry, Caine’s only hope is to locate Plinry’s so-called blackcollars—the elusive, martial arts–trained guerilla force whose wartime resistance efforts are legendary. With his life and the freedom of everyone in the TDE on the line, Caine’s success will depend on whether or not he can find them. . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story; poor technology - now fixed! December 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
EDIT: I've received word that this has been fixed. Downloaded a new copy and I see that all the ones I had bookmarked have been corrected. Thanks for that!

I really like the storyline. Zahn has put together a gripping story that sucks you in and makes you want to find out what's going to happen next. Highly recommended!

However, the publisher has done it a great disservice. Typos are all over this book - it reads like they took the original print version, ran it through OCR software, and then never bothered to fix the typos that introduced. "Who needs copy editing? Just push it out there and make that money!" It's like the publisher in "Elf" who signs off on printing a book with two missing pages. Who's going to notice something small like that?

Well, I noticed and it's really, really annoying. Yes, it's "only" the Kindle edition, but take some pride in your work and show some respect for the author's vision!

5.0 out of 5 stars Zahn's Best Work! August 3, 2003
By events3
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This and the Spinneret book are Zahn's best (he eventually lost me in the Cobra series & Coming of Age). This is action-packed and suspenseful. The Blackcollar, with their super-human reflexes were man's last hope against the alien invaders. This is the story of their guerrilla war against that enemy - and their human nemesis, Galway, who is attempting to prevent the Blackcollar from doing greater damage to mankind than has already been done by the aliens. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard-hitting military science fiction. January 18, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I often find myself disappointed by Timothy Zahn, especially with the inordinate time he spends with fantasy and Star Wars themes. His major contribution to military science fiction writing is via the creation of the Blackcollars and the Cobras. These display Timothy Zahn at his best with convincing plot lines, well-developed characters and interesting stories which make for page turning anticipatory reading. The best recommendation I can offer for Blackcollar is that I own the series. Definitely five star material.

5.0 out of 5 stars A mixture of science fiction and martial arts March 17, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
If you enjoy science fiction mixed with martial arts, as well as a book with plenty of action, this book is for you. It's companion novel, "The Backlash Mission", is also a worthwhile read. After re-reading the novels for the -nth- time recently, I'm ready for the (long awaited) third novel in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect November 11, 2012
By Peace
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
It was nice to read a good solid clean science fiction book. I won't own any books my kids can't read because of morality issues. I have young kids who read way above grade level and grab books so finding a book that wasn't to tweeny and yet clean was great. Solid adventures with some good turns in plot. Zhann has a way of making you feel like that charecter could be the kid down the streat. Excellent Characterization. Loved the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Zahn Great! October 11, 2006
Format:Hardcover
Timothy Zahn is one of my favorite sci-fi authors, but his quality has been decreasing somewhat as of late (Manta's Gift and Angelmass for instance). But this new edition to the Blackcollar series was superb!

"The Judas Solution" would be an enjoyable read without reading the previous Blackcollars. However, the story is fairly complicated and it continues right where the others left off, so I would highly recommend that you read them first - they are great! It had been awhile since I had read them and it took me a few chapters to remember what had gone on and who was who.

This book had lots of twists and a deep plot, it also wrapped up the series nicely. I would recommend it to anyone who likes action sci-fi.

3.0 out of 5 stars 20 Years Too Late And Too Little May 23, 2006
Format:Hardcover
I have waited on this book for 20 years. Timothy Zahn's last Blackcollar book was written and published in 1986. I wish I could say it was worth the wait!!! I WISH I could give it 5 stars but I am stretching it to give 3 stars. I have read the first 2 books at least 10 times and even bought the hard back copy so I could continue to read them when I need a little "Derring Do" in my life. In the first two books all of the characters were fully developed and Mr. Zahn made you care about what happened to them. No so much in this book. The character were pretty lackluster, there was none of the drama of the first two books between the characters. In fact there was no real tension between any of the characters except the aliens. In this book although he tied up a lot of loose ends and the Humans finally rid the TDE of the EVIL aliens, it was more of a "What the Hell, lets leave the poor humans alone" instead of the Good Guys defeating the Bad Guys. Also in the first books the Ryqril were supposedly the fiercest of warriors and even a "Blackcollar" hesitated about taking one on in a hand-to-hand fight. But in this book five, six and more were killed by individual Blackcollars. And this was treated as"Eh no big deal - business as usual"'

Jamus Galway's plan: to turn the Blackcollars and their combat skill into unknowing tools of the Ryqril was OK but to think that he could do so on a permanent basis was "too hard to swallow" Also having the clone Judas act as a spy was very original but the clone played a Very small role in the book. Basically he stood around and let everyone do everything. He didn't even make a very convincing spy.

I am sure that if I were new to the books and just now reading all three together then my opinion might be different. But after waiting 20 years for the good guys to win, I felt it was too little, too late.

2.0 out of 5 stars unimpressed
I didn't care much for this book. It seemed like it should have been written as a graphic novel instead. The characters were weak and the storyline though interesting was thin.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can you say Deus Ex Machina
An interesting conceit, the plot is fast moving and the characters are interesting, but the astonishing skills the characters have at hand are always a little suspect.
