Book Description

Brian W. Foster makes his entrance into the literary world with "Blackened White", a first person account of life, love, faith, and pain. In this collection of poems, essays, and short stories, Foster offers a series of brutally honest, often humorous, and profoundly ironic writings chronicling a journey into his own human condition. Using his unique style of prose and storytelling, we observe a young man wrestling with his faith in the midst of relationships, addictions, sexuality and the unending, relentless desire to be whole. Author and Grammy award winning singer Kevin Max says Blackened White "Prods the flesh with electrodes of hyper emotion, dangerous subtlety and purposefully mannered archaism". Likening it to an "Open House flier", Foster invites the reader along the journey with him through this thought-provoking collection, which is sure to leave an indelible mark on the soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing collection of writings, April 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Brian W. Foster's collection of writings, Blackened White is my favorite book I've read so far this year. It's a dark, grimy, yet beautiful examination of life, love, loss, and brokenness. The author grabs the human condition by the face, stares deeply into the abyss, and finds beauty, hope, and truth in the darkest places. Foster examines life in Los Angeles in a way I've never seen done before, connecting the reader with the most intimate of memories and thoughts, becoming universally relatable in his transparency. He reminds me of Bukowski in his sarcasm, irony, and whit, but brings a sincerity and depth that I think Bukowski never had. Brian W. Foster is an exciting, emerging voice that I can't get enough of!

5.0 out of 5 stars great stuff April 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
For a gritty but heartfelt look at Los Angeles this book knocked me out. I realized half way through that it does something very uncommon. It shows us the world through the eyes of a junkie but doesn't revel in darkness. This is a person who is getting by, like the rest of us, but happens to have a serious addiction. The other thing i loved about it was that it wasn't up to it's neck in irony. It is wry but there is a lot of sincerity. The speaker is not above this world he is looking at. He very much inhabits it and the beauty he finds there is beautiful. And the pain he finds there is painful.

5.0 out of 5 stars brutally honest April 17, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
With little allegory, or literary tricks, Brian Foster reveals the heart of a man. A brutally honest collection of words that passionately, eloquently, abruptly, and blatantly describe 'that' which is the struggle and triumph of a soul. Beautiful in its simplicity and amazingly complex in its thought provoking nature, Blackened White brings hope to a generation run rife with anxiety and despair. A simply marvelous read!
