This second edition of the critically acclaimed dictionary originally published in 1989 adds more than 300 new entries and amplifies over 1000 others. The Blackfoot Dictionary is a comprehensive guide to the vocabulary of Blackfoot, an Algonquian language spoken by thousands in Alberta and Montana. It contains more than 4,000 Blackfoot-English entries and an English index of more than 5,000 entries, and provides thorough coverage of cultural terms. The transcription uses an official, technically accurate alphabet and the authors have classified entries and selected examples based on more than 25 years of research.

(REAL NAME)
This is a detailed and informative dictionary. It includes a pronunciation guide, Blackfoot-English and English-Blackfoot sections. (There is no grammatical overview of Blackfoot included.) The Blackfoot entries are in-depth, with various verb tenses and different forms of the same word provided.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent resource, February 9, 2010

To my knowledge, this is the only lexicographical resource for this rapidly disappearing language, certainly the only one easily available outside the linguistic community. As such, it is invaluable for anyone seeking information on Blackfoot. A complete English-to-Blackfoot index with both lexical entries and their relevant page numbers follows the extensive Blackfoot-to-English section, wherein the principal forms of words are cited (for instance, the plural and possessed forms of nouns) with relevant tonal changes, to provide all necessary morphological information. Cross-references to similar or derived words are also provided.

This is a wonderful book for learning the Blackfoot Language. I wish that more books would be published like this, as well as audio cds to learn this wonderful language.
