5.0 out of 5 stars A True Western, May 26, 2002
William Johnstone writes about the west with a passion that infects his readers. Purchased this for my son and decided to check it out. Action and authentic dialogue speed you through page after page of this well told story. Characters ring with the good and the ugly of the unruly west. A fast read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Preacher; not Mr. Preacher, November 26, 2007

Johnstone provides plenty of action in this story. I really enjoy reading about the lives of people who traveled through and helped settle the Western U.S. and the Rocky Mountains. Preacher, not Mr. Preacher always defends the good, both in the white man and in the Indian, but never backs down from a battle with the evil in mankind. Even though he does not "cotton" to the pilgrims that travel in the wagons, he does help them again in this story. He is also trying to prevent an Indian War that white men are trying to start. There is plenty of action here and even some romance that you have to read to believe. Take a ride out West in the mid 1800's; you'll enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The First Mountain Man: Blackfoot Messiah, May 29, 2002

Dadburn it if you done like a good gol'darn book about the real west then you ain't worth the powder to blow you there. Preacher is our hero who takes on the job of guiding a bunch of shave-tail dragoons toward the Big Horn to build a fort. Trouble is, there's a whole passle of indians from just about every tribe around all gathered together to stand in Preacher's way. Well, if'n you read any at all of the easy-to-read paperback books written by William Johnstone, you know Preacher will stop them.
