About the Author

Rob, short for Robyn (yes, he is really a she) Thurman lives in Indiana, land of rolling hills and cows, deer, and wild turkeys. Many, many turkeys. She is also the author of the Cal Leandros Series: Nightlife, Moonshine, Madhouse, and Deathwish; has a story in the anthology Wolfsbane and Mistletoe; and is the author of Trick of the Light, the first book in the Trickster series.

Besides wild, ravenous turkeys, she has a dog (if you don’t have a dog, how do you live?)—one hundred pounds of Siberian husky. He looks like a wolf, has paws the size of a person’s hand, ice blue eyes, teeth out of a Godzilla movies, and the ferocious habit of hiding under the kitchen table and peeing on himself when strangers come by. Fortunately, she has another dog that is a little more invested in keeping the food source alive. By the way, the dogs were adopted from shelters. They were fully grown, already housetrained, and grateful as hell. Think about it next time you’re looking for a Rover or Fluffy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Self acceptance... March 6, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
When I first heard that Cal would suffer amnesia in this installment, I was afraid it would mean he'd spend the entire book alone trying to find out who he is. But, Thurman is more imaginative than that. In fact, Niko finds Cal right away (duh). Cal still doesn't remember who he is, but alá Jason Bourne, he remembers how to kill, and he's not sure he likes who he was before. Blackout is a very different book from the first five of the series. The purpose of the underlying mystery is a means for Cal to come to terms with himself; an end to self-loathing for being a "monster." It's a huge step for the character and, I think, for the series.

Cal gets bitten by a supernatural spider that causes his memory loss. More strangely, it seems to be suppressing his Auphe side as well, leading Niko to make a very tough choice. But, a choice that isn't really his to make. I think this installment has even more humor (the black kind, naturally) than the other books. Because Cal doesn't remember, readers get to "meet" many of the characters all over again and remember just why they are so endearing. Cal's constant inner monologue and his reactions to Niko's OCD- "my body is a temple," and the puck's depravity, had me laughing out loud several times. It was intriguing to watch Cal see himself and them through new eyes.

Overall, though I was thrown by how different this book was, I thought it was excellent. It is well-written, with the sharpest dialog yet, and a good launching pad for the next book. And, I was so satisfied to finally get an answer to the burning question...is Cal the only one the Auphe made? Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Slowest book of the series so far... April 25, 2011
By Vampire
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I seriously enjoyed the first 5 books of this series and was excited to find a new world to get lost it. It seems that with each book, the characters just seem to be more of the same and dont grow at all. The plot and setting and action in this book seemed to take place entirely in Cals' head and there was nothing external going on. We get the vibe that no one really likes Promise and she just exists to get on our nerves and her relationship with Niko never evolves. She makes a snide comment to Cal, then hopes Niko never finds out, and then her 2 minutes in the book are gone. The "good Cal" was interesting as a plot device for a few chapters, and then never really went anywhere else. I miss the action in the rest of the series. If the next installment doesn't go anywhere new, I dont know if I'll keep following the series. Certainly not paying for them, will wait til my library gets them. Bottom line: if you are not a diehard fan of this series, this book could be skipped altogether.

Unlike the other Cal Leandros stories, I can guarantee that you'll never remember what the story of this book after time has passed. The tired device of amnesia is used so that Cal once again can make the same inner monologues that are getting to be oh-so-tiresome (am I a horrible person? blah blah) since he doesn't remember going through this process in the past. Most of the book goes in this fashion where he needs to reconcile his forgotten 'killer' self with the newly birthed 'good-Cal' who was created by Amnesia. Nico needs to be discovered again and dozens of pages attributed yet again to his 'Zen-Monk' qualities. That weird feeling of deja-vu can be so s-l-e-e-p inducing...*snore*.
