Book Description

January 15, 2002
Enter an all too conceivable future when the Religious Right has taken over our country and basically made everything fun illegal. Where AIDS has become even more letal, and those found to be HIV positive are shipped off to concentration camps that are so over-crowded and under-staffed that the dead often lay in their beds for days before being carted off the be burned.

The Freedom Coalition is fighting in the West to free the country from the grip of the Right Party's fanatical leader, Heilinger, and his so-called "Good Law," and the rebel forces are drawing nearer. Lorn Zany has seen too much death and injustice at the hands of the Right Party for one life time. New it looks like he might just live to see the Right America crumble. That is, of course, if he doesn't die of AIDS first.

5.0 out of 5 stars All For A Good Cause, December 26, 2001
By

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Blackrose Avenue (Paperback)
I read this book in a single sitting, and when I was through, I wanted everyone I knew to have a copy. It's raw, it's honest, and it's heartwrenching and warming. It's living history, and there will never be another project like it. These are real people telling real stories, and giving their time, their energy and even their money to help someone repair their lives after the tragic events of 9/11. I hope many others contribute to the cause by sharing the contributor's efforts in remembering the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is Why I Read SF, August 13, 2001
By
Lee Martindale (Plano, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blackrose Avenue (Paperback)
It's been a long time since an SF novel gave me the shakes, but Mark Shepherd's Blackrose Avenue has managed to give me a pronounced case. Its near and terrifyingly plausible future, where right-wing political agendas are The Law and right-wing religious extremists have The Power has me trembling with anger. Shepherd's gripping, gritty prose and uncompromising look at bigotry should be required reading for anyone who's ever thought "human rights can't mean *them*" or wavered on the separation of church and state. This one has teeth.
