This is a must for any student of California history and//or African American studies. Lapp's generous use of primary source material adds additional credibility to an already laudable scholarly work. His bibliography is an excellent beginning reference point for anyone researching any number of salient topics on the subject of the black experience in California during and immediately following the Gold Rush.
