For current or future law students Black's Law Dictionary is an essential reference book for your library, and as one of my professors told me, "if you don't want an abridged education, don't buy the abridged version." You'll also gain access to an online version of Black's through any Westlaw account, but it's one version behind, and the UI isn't as easy to navigate. I think the hardcover dictionary is worth the money. Finally, a word about the Deluxe Edition: no. I can't see paying almost double for what it offers. My advice is to stick with the Standard Edition.

I bought the Black's Law Dictionary as a giift to my daughter who is a Para Legal, personal assistant and office manager at a Tampa, Florida Law firm. She completed one year of Law studies at Nova University. At that time I had bought the paperback version of this essential book of definitions. She now has a well paying job at a law firm that handles all the complications of probate and attends night school at Cooley Law at their new campus in Tampa. As a gift for being accepted at Cooley and to help at the office I bought her the Hardcover Black's Law dictionary. It is more definitive and deep. She was thrilled and very happy. To me that made it worth every penny. Also Amazon's price was ten dollars less than elsewhere. One of the things that helps regular people to be smart people is the reference libraries that they have access to. This is definitely one of those books. A.P.L.

I usually have this dictionary next to me when I'm studying. I rarely take it with me, as it's huge....But nonetheless I would recommend this version or at the very least the pocket edition if you're about to start law school. It's very helpful for words that you don't know, and words that you thought you knew until you realized they had a different meaning. You can get the definitions on Westlaw, but I find that I study better if I don't have to get on the internet to do my work.

If you had but one law book, this should be it.
The Oxford series on Constitutional Law, SCOTUS, etc., are wonderful tomes. However, Black's would be the one book if there could be no other in your library. Read more
