If you loved the Blacksad graphic novels, and want to know how on earth this kind of art is even possible, look no further. It gives you an insight into the first Blacksad novel in particular, complete with the first rough draft right down to the finished linework before the colours were added. I have to say, I like Guarnido's linework far more than the finished coloured work. He is an amazing draftsman (a little experience goes a long way), and I as an animator in training find this excellent reference material (drawing teaching nowadays really isn't structured properly). Included is an interview with writer Juan Díaz Canalez about the story, along with Juanjo Guarnido's thoughts about each and every page. This book belongs in every aspiring character artist's library, whether he/she wants to animate or make graphic novels of their own. To top it off, this book is light and beautifully set-up. Highly recommended.

"Blacksad: The Sketch Files" is a look at the first Blacksad comic and how it was put together. It's remarkably comprehensive - there's a long interview (interspersed with studies and sketches); pencilwork, commentary, and various sketches, color studies, and storyboards for every page of the comic; some early work on Arctic Nation; and some minor other extra material.

The material is more than sufficient for the purpose; the interview is wide-ranging and both it and the page-by-page commentary give a sense of how the novel was built and the motivations behind a lot of the choices. The comments on the cinematic sources of a lot of the panel setup and artwork were particularly informative. There's little finished work, as it's more focused on a behind-the-scenes look. For that, it's a worthy choice.
