This review is from: The Blacksmith (Paperback)
I think this must be one of Louise Cooper's earlier titles, and it seems to show. I'm a huge lover of many of Cooper's books - The Summer Witch, The Chaos Gate and Time Master trilogy, Our Lady of the Snow and The Book of Paradox, so I'd been expecting more of the same with The Blacksmith.

Unfortunately though, I was horribly dissapointed. There doesn't seem to be much of a plot here: woman is introduced to nice guy Richard Pendor by her father, after Richard comes to his forge looking for a job to be done for him. The rest of the story (as far as I read) seems to be about the slow and careful development of their relationship as they get to know each other and there's a lot of going out to drink at the local pub, talking about village life and the pretty scenary and eating sandwiches and strawberries.

I got the feeling that Jen (the female character) was hiding a dark past from Richard, but the tedium of having to read through the slow development of their relationship was enough to put me off from caring to know what the big secret was. I skipped ahead a bit, and from what I gatherd there didn't look to be all that much to reward me for the effort of plodding on. I only read until about halfway through this book before I gave up through sheer boredom.

I expect perhaps this just isn't my sort of thing, and I should stick to Cooper's fantasy works.
