4.0 out of 5 stars Maestro of P-Funk Fame shows his Versatility, November 8, 1999

I enjoyed this entire album. This CD demonstrates what a versatile musician Bernie Worrell really is. Chiefly known for his work with Parliament/Funkadelic, Bootsy's Rubber Band and the dozens of other P-Funk incarnations, Bernie Worrell is also a classically trained musician who can transcend the labels into which we like to pigeonhole artists. Listeners will hear elements of jazz, blues, classical musings and good ole-fashioned funky grooves. I gave special kudos to the interplay between Worrell and Tony Williams on "Blood Secrets," and the classical sounding "Revelation in Black Light." Bernie Worrell is a total musician. Any fan of P-funk must have this recording.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great new stuff from an old time funker., January 26, 1999
This review is from: Blacktronic Science (Audio CD)
This album shows listeners the classical mix with sounds of todays music. Combined with funkers from the Parliament/Funkadelic days, "Bootsy Collins, Gary Cooper, and George Clinton, this album is a must for funk fans. Bernie mixes his classical schoolings with modern sounds. A twist for the average music listener, "Bootsy Collins" plays acuostic bass in his selected tracks. Bernie and Bill Laswell did an excellent job producing a master of a project. After 25 plus years of listening to these guys they always seem to amaze me with their talent. Congratulations Bernie!

4.0 out of 5 stars More Paddy Ashdown than Tony Blair, October 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Blacktronic Science (Audio CD)
The whole album has a wonderful, thick sound. I docked it a star because I thought the songs didn't flow into each other very well, and because some of the synthesizer sounds are dated. Nitpicking (and it is nitpicking) aside, if you like Parliament, you'll like this, and if you liked Parliament but always thought they could have been 20% jazzier, you'll love this. In addition to those elements, Bernie throws some rock, classical, hip-hop, and gospel (and maybe other stuff I haven't picked out yet) into the soup.

Among the many guest artists: George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bill Laswell, Maceo Parker, Tony Williams.

this cd has the best of both worlds-the trippy funk instrumentals ala "woo, the other side",and it also includes some bumpin club-type tunes that seriously pound!there are some lighthearted raps in a few cards, too.the fact that bootzilla and g-clinton make lengthly guest appearances is a cool thing, always!I admit to having some hesitation before listening to it,but it really is a trippy,p-funky addition to my collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars FUNK AND JAZZ ALL ON ONE COMPACT DISC MIGHT HAVE BEEN A BIT TOO MUCH FOR FUNK PURISTS..., December 17, 2009

...And being Distributed by Rhino Records didn't help much either! Keyboard Wizard Bernie Worrell had been doing his thing for well over 25 (Twenty-Five) years when this album was released. The Tracks that are Funky...Are FUNKY! Those being: "Time Was", and "Dissinfordollars" along with the help of: George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and Gary 'Mudbone' Cooper! I think that's MORE than enough funk for you???. The Jazz Tracks: "Blood Secrets", and "X-Factor" are straight up Bar-B-Q Jazz Groovers! along with the help of: Maceo Parker and Tony Williams! I think that's MORE than enough Bar-B-Q Jazz for you??? We are talkin' well-seasoned pros Just ALL of the above Tracks! There are 3 (Three) Hip Hop-Funk Tracks featuring Rappers: James Sumbi and Mike G. that will please the youngbloods who are still learnin' about Funk. This is a Well-Rounded collection, but a seperate Funk Album and Jazz Album would have worked far much better. Rhino Records don't get any medals for Promotion and Marketing (That's been proven too many times!) Even Arista Records got a Billboard Charted Single on Bernie in 1979! Like soooooooooooo many other albums this too got lost in the shuffle, but if it was Promoted right it would have seen some nice Chart Number on Billboard's R&B Singles Chart ("Time Was" and "Dissinfordollars"), Their (Billboard) Jazz Albums Chart ("Blood Secrets" and "X-Factor"), And even their R&B Albums Chart (The "Blacktronic Science" album itself!)...No big numbers, but some decent numbers. This was a Billboard Chart Worthy Album Project! This Out Of Print Gem average about $20.00 on a good day, so that should tell you something...You'd think???

4.0 out of 5 stars Bernie Worrell Hits a Home Run!, November 15, 2008
This review is from: Blacktronic Science (Audio CD)
Thank you Bill Laswell for producing a great CD with a collection of great musicians but thank you for bringing George Clinton to the party. This CD is a little better than "Funk of Ages" becasuse the lead singing of George on some of the tracks especially "Flex" and "Dissinfordollars"(I loved the intro for "Dissinfordollars" with the dogs!).Bernie Worrell plays his part perfectly on this CD especially on "Revelation In Black Light" and "X Factor". I wish the jam sessions would go on a little longer but I liked it a lot.As fas as Bernie's synthesizer playing being dated submitted by a poster on this CD review,it was done on purpose for a retro P-Funk sound Bernie was influential during his career with P-Funk...so there!

bernie came back funky, this is what i think he woiuld have did back in the 70's but was'nt given enough time cause the funk mob did so many songs damn the family series ain't even half the unreleased p-funk catalog, anyway bernie delivers the funk as usual, some of this sounds like some ghetto opera, ghetto vincent price stuff, scary like bernie did back when he made kidd funkadelic the synthesized version of maggot brain, but all flavors of funk are on here, maceo, bootsy, george clinton, mudbone a lot of folks come and help bernie out, a must for all p-funk fans for dj's and producers looking for a beat check this funk out.
