*** UPDATE November 2013 at bottom of review ***

youtube.com/watch?v=oITJ2xGBuT8 - YouTube compresses video - quality is actually much better than shown on YouTube.

I am new to dash cams but not to mobile technology.

Its pretty cool - it has WiFi, GPS, 3-axis gyro, accelerometer, shock sensors and ambient light sensor. It records to a MicroSD card or you can download directly via WiFi to your iDevice or Android.

I bought this 500GW-HD about a week ago and I have been fiddling with it via Telnet/SSH/FTP, iPhone 5 & iPad 4 iOS app, Android app (rooted Kindle 2 running Jelly Bean 4.2) and the MicroSD card directly. I am primarily a Mac and Linux user on the desktop, although I loaded Windows 7 on my Macbook Air & iMac to look at the Blackvue Viewer Windows application (which is much better than the Mac version, BTW. More on this later)

My first impressions of the Blackvue DR500GW-HD are, by and large, positive. The 500GW-HD gets warm, but never hot. The camera mount is solid and very adjustable, the angle of view is excellent and the video quality is much better than I expected, even at night. Audio is crystal clear and in-sync. I expect that Firmware updates will fix/mitigate some of the more glaring defects discussed below.

It has some kinks, which is to be expected as this technology is still maturing. In particular, the firmware is not actually updated with any changes you make on the SD card (config.ini), the camera just reads the config.ini and uses that. But not always. Sometimes, after a power down/power up, the SSID and pwd will be forgotten or some of your other settings (timezone etc.) will be ignored. This may be a Blackvue Mac vs.

Excellent video resolution and easy to install behind the rear view mirror. Had a small problem with missing installation hardware however it was resolved promptly. Keep in mind the business is not located in the USA (DGTL SYSTEMS Incheon, Korea) so communications can be a bit testy. Highly recommend a 32 GB SanDisk Ultra SD card to allow for a decent record time without high compression recording. The GPS annotation on screen with vehicle speed, time and location is great for citations issued by over zealous Highway Patrol officers who think they know how to use a Ladar gun in traffic. Video can provide a good defense for rolling stop and red light camera citations too. If used properly could really make a patrol officer look incompetent in court and it's perfectly legal.

I liked the design and size of the BlackVue. The voice feedback was great. GPS and Wifi where great too. But, the purpose of having a dash cam is to record video, and that's where it failed. The picture it recorded was blocky, smudgy and grainy. Not what you would expect from a HD cam. The cheapest GoPro beats the BlackVue's video quality by a long shot. I tried both max and normal compression with no results. Too bad. I was really looking forward to this product.

This is my second BlackVue DVR, but this time I've decided to get it with Power Magic combo. The power charger in my 2013 Ford Focus placed in the middle console between passenger and driver and having BlackVue power connected there looks not pretty.

After figuring out how to remove the glove box on the car, the installation of the Power Magic was very simple and straightforward. Unit works like a charm. So, I'm very pleased with results.

I would give it 5 stars, if I could figure out how to set the time. The only time setting option I can find allows you to set the time zone. I read the directions, I googled it........ nothing.......I checked the frequently asked questions, I can not find anything on time setting. It is off by over 8 hours. If It's supposed to it automatically, it's not doing it, it would really be nice if there was someone to ask........

Otherwise, it takes great videos........

I finally figured out on my own, the GPS is supposed to set the correct date and time on start up. I took it out of the car and brought it in the house and powered it with a 110 to 12 volt converter. After the startup, the time was still off by over 8 hours. I pushed the reset button on the back of the unit after formatting the card for the third or forth time, this time it had the correct time. The only help from pittasoft Was an "E-Mail" that stated "after I send them the serial number and they verify it it was officially distributed, then they would get back to me. I have not gotten back to me yet.

I read before I bought it, in a lot of reviews, that the unit gets hot when it's recording. I was not prepared for just how hot. I have serious concerns about how long it will last,

Finally heard back from pittasoft, after making me send them the serial number, they finally responded back with: Contact your official distributor for repair.........Do you think they really needed the serial number to tell me that?

I got the BlackVue because of it's small form factor and it was recommended to me by a co-worker, but after using it for a few weeks I have more complaints than compliments.

Firstly, the quality is horrible. I think the camera is capable of more, but the compression codec is ridiculously blotchy and every frame contains artifacts. The quality is nowhere near what you get on a GoPro or a Contour+. Secondly, everything about this camera is inconvenient. The SD card can't easily be removed because you need to disconnect the power cable and then open a small latch before having access to the card, and if this camera is glued to your windshield, good luck getting enough finger clearance to get it out. The smartphone app works, but require your phone to connect to the BlackVue's dedicated WiFi network, so you lose all data on your phone while you're connected to the camera, meaning that you can't watch the live feed while streaming music or using SiriusXM on your phone, which is my biggest problem. The camera has no option to join another WiFi network, and there's no way to connect withe Bluetooth. The other problem is that the clips the camera records are limited to 1-3 minutes each, meaning after an hour long ride, you have 20 different files, and they overlap each other so you can't just concatenate them in a video editor without having to trim each clip and piece them together. Getting videos off is a nightmare, it takes forever to transfer clips over WiFi, and as I said, you're better off not trying to remove the SD card once the thing is mounted. The WiFi isn't good enough to access from inside your house unless you have an attached garage or something.
