A Kid's Review
Thirteen year old Brodie Lynch is ready for the best summer of his life. But, when his cousin Alex arrived that was all ruined. Because Alex came he couldn't go on a camping trip with his best friend, John Sun, because Alex wouldn't be able to be out in the wilderness alone. John Sun decided to leave for the summer. He was also suppose to be going to the movies with Pauline Genero, but Alex ruined that. One morning Brodie woke up early to take Alex down to the blackwater at the part where it was damned to make a pond. This pond was called Dikins pond and in the middle of it there was a big rock called the toadstool. He was going to teach alex how to swim. When they arrived at the pond Brodie saw Pauline, the girl he was suppose to go to the movies with, with another guy, Otis. Brodie became jelous and hid their towels in a hole. He than when out to the rock where they were sitting and started to pull at Pauline's legs. He thought they were coming after him so he swam as hard as he could to shore. When he arrived to the shore he saw Pauline and Otis rolling down the Blackwater. He tried to save them, but only injured his head. When the police arrived Alex said Otis pulled Pauline off the rock and said Alex tried to save them. They stuck with this lie for awhile. Soon Brodie starts recieving weird things like the towels rolled up from the whole. Pauline died and Otis was still missing and they thought Otis was still alive. Soon they received a paper that said tell. They found Otis dead. Somenody else must have saw him. Will they tell the police or will Brodie become so guilty that he fesses up. To find out read this book. This book is easily to get hooked on. It's a easy read and very suspensful. I would reccomend it to anyone to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars About Lies And Truths, September 22, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Blackwater (Hardcover)
When I first read the book it didn't seem really great to me
until I read on. Brodie didn't really mean for otis and pauline to die, but it wasn't really smart of him to do what he did. He
did tell pauline he had to cancel those four dates with her, and it's not like they were dating. So it wasn't her fault if she was with otis. It was nice of brodies cousin, alex, to not say anything to the cops but wrong to say that otis was trying to put the moves on pauline. Brodie should have told them sooner before things got harder on him.I know it was hard for him to tell people the truth about what happend but he should have known it was going to get out sooner or later. In the end he did confess, and it will probably be even harder for him to see pauline's and otis's family and everyone else because their going to think of him as a murderur. But then time will pass and everyone will forgive him and he'll forgive himself.I really enjoyed Eve Bunting's novelty because it's great for kids and young adults everywhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blackwater, October 10, 2001

I think Blackwater was a great book. I like the way the author wrote the book from a kids point of view. It made you feel like you were there. It was suspensful when he kept secret what the main character had done....not gone out and told everything. I would recommend this book for other kids to read....especially if they like modern day stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brodie- Think Before You Act, July 15, 2001
The story of teenager Brodie Lynch is a troubling tale. He's not a bad kid, but like most teenagers, he doesn't think before he acts. This time it has its consequences and Brodie struggles with them throughtout the book.

Yes, Brodie is repetitive as he debates what he should do: tell the truth, or run with the lie. I find this to be true to the male mindset. After witnessing (and causing) this tragedy, Brodie would have very little else to think of.

Holden Caulfield, from J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, was compared to Brodie Lynch. The two are not comparable. Holden Caulfield's demons are a mental problem; Brodie Lynch's stem directly from his own actions.

I said it before and I'll say it again. Brodie is a good kid, but he doesn't think before he acts. This is how many kids, especially boys (I know, I used to be one- still am maybe), wander through life. "Nothing bad will happen." I can almost hear Brodie thinking it, but this time something bad does happen and Brodie must deal with it. Holden Caulfield only wishes he would have caused the trouble Brodie did.

There are two troubling sides of this story. It ends like a Tennessee Williams play: abruptly. We are left hanging on many issues, but this is an important idea kids have to learn: sometimes we never know the whole story.

The second thing that bothered me was the spelling of Brodie's name. It looks so femimine with the "ie." I've only ever seen it spelt "Brody," but I'm being petty now.

If you're looking for a chilling story with a couple tear-jerking scenes that only add to the wonder of this book, please read Blackwater.

If you're a parent or gaurdian looking for a story that could evoke thoughts of thinking before you act, again this is a great story to read with your child. It's a moral that I can't stress enough as I work with kids. That's why this book is a favorite of mine

Thrilling! I loved every page of it! It was awesome! It is a story about a practical joke that went too far and the concequences that came of it. It shows that the truth is ALWAYS better, no matter what. Because sometimes a guily concience can be bad enough...

4.0 out of 5 stars BLACK WATER, April 26, 2002

Book Review

Black Water

Have you ever had a best friend who died and the death of that friend changed your life? Black Water is a river I called the "Death River."I think this book is good for both parents and kids because the character faces a lot of problems in life: asking a girl out, dealing with his cousin, and murder.
Brodie Lynch is a plain thirteen year old boy with a lot of caring people in his life. For example, his grandmother gave him four movie passes. "My grandma sent me a pass for the Cineplex for two people for four times," Brodie told Pauline.
"Cool! Ok. I like movies." It seems that Brodie liked Pauline a lot. He would do anything to make Pauline be his girlfriend.
Another character that Brodie has to deal with is his cousin named Alex who is twelve. Alex is a bad boy that will say stuff to get himself out of trouble. "I'm going to teach you to swim," Brodie said.
"We're going to the river." It is kind of nice for Brodie to teach his little cousin Alex to swim. In the long run, Alex will repay Brodie back. This will happen sooner than later.
When Brodie and his cousin Alex went to the Black Water (Death River), Brodie sees Pauline with Otis. "She's such a babe," said Alex. "How would you know? You can hardly see her," Brodie said to Alex. Alex whined, "Quit pushing, I was just giving you an opinion." "Well, don't," Brodie said in an angry way.
Brodie gathered up Otis and Pauline's stuff and hid it somewhere. Brodie went into the water and went straight for Pauline and Otis. Brodie grabbed Pauline's leg and Otis grabbed Pauline's arm. The two boys were both pulling on Pauline. She screamed, "Let go!" Brodie let Pauline's leg go and Pauline and Otis fell back killing themselves.
I think that the life lesson of "Black Water" is if you like somebody and they don't like you back or is with another person, you should just move on to someone else. You shouldn't get jealous or turn to violence. In the end, the author leaves you with a lot of questions. One such question was, should Brodie go to jail for
killing Pauline and Otis? Go pick up the book and you'll see what I'm talking about. The life lesson of this book is if you like somebody so much and one day you see that person you like with somebody you is not like you. Don't get all jealous and kill them like Brodie killed Otis and Pauline because you will in up in jail. "WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND." Letting that person you love go his or her on way is better than killing the love of your heart and the person with the love of your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and Absorbing, May 12, 2001

Brodie's summer isn't turning out at all the way he wanted. The arrival of his cousin Alex has put an end to his plans for a camping trip and a date with Pauline, a girl he likes. Even so, Brodie is determined to make an effort to be nice, which is why he decides to teach Alex to swim.

In a sheltered pond that lies beside the awesome Blackwater River, Brodie and Alex come across Pauline and another boy, Otis. Angry and hurt, Brodie decides to play a practical joke on them - a joke that goes disastrously wrong.

When Pauline and Otis are swept away by the formidable Blackwater currents, Brodie is torn between telling the truth and his fear of the consequences if he does. His attempts to rescue the two kids have made him a local hero and Brodie is sure that only he and Alex know the truth. However, it soon appears that there was another witness to the crime when Brodie receives a note on which is written simply the word "Tell".

"Blackwater" is a book that is full of suspense and will keep you reading right until the end. This was a compelling, absorbing read that shows the consequences of lying to cover the truth. The plot races along at the same rate as the Blackwater River itself and the characters are well drawn and believable. "Blackwater" shows how one boy's life was changed forever by a seemingly harmless prank and how a guilty conscience can be worse than the truth itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Only Book to give me Chills, December 4, 2011
I read this book as a teen and really loved it.
Never before has a book made me nervous or given me the chills. This book was shocking and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I thought at the time it was a little scary.
I recommend.

13 year old boy named Broodie was look forward to a very good summer. Then his cousin Alex came along and ruined everything. One day Broodie and Alex went down to the Blackwater river because Broodie was going to teach Alex how to swim. He saw Pauline, a girl that he asked out, and another guy Otis making out. So he decided to pull a little prank on them. But the prank went horribly wrong. They were on a rock, that's above the Blackwater river kissing. So first, Broodie hid their towels. Then he went into the river and grabbed Pauline's ankle. Otis sounded mad so Broodie swam back to shore as fast as he could. When he got to shore, he noticed that Otis and Pauline were flowing down the river. He tried to save them, but couldn't. Alex made up a lie that Broodie was trying to save them, and Broodie went along with it, making him look more like a hero then a killer. But then the towels appeared at his doorsteps, and he knew someone saw what happened. They find the bodies of both Pauline and Otis, and they are both in fact dead. To find out what will happen next, you'll have to read the book.
The importance of this book is making the right decision ad not trying to cover up what you did with lies no matter how bad what u did was. I would recommend this book to the early teen age group. Teens around 12 and 13 I think would like this book.
