There is far more to Vangelis than his Academy Award winning, platinum, #1-charting 1981 album Chariots Of Fire and its #1 title song. Odyssey - The Definitive Collection (Hip-O Records), released November 4, 2003, celebrates his most famous and enduring recordings over 30 years, from 1973 to 2003, from his pioneering electronic music to the now classic "Chariots Of Fire" to a new ... Editorial Reviews

Limited 24kt Gold SACD Hybrid pressing. The Blade Runner soundtrack was composed by Vangelis for Ridley Scott's 1982 film Blade Runner. It is mostly a dark, melodic combination of classical composition and synthesizers which mirrors the futuristic film noir envisioned by Scott. This authorized version of the soundtrack was not released until 1994. The film itself has become one of the most beloved sci-fi films of the '80s and beyond.

Customer Reviews

There's a reason this is one of the best loved movie scores ever.
David Longhorn
Although this official release adds digital sound effects and includes tracks not present in the film, it is my opinion that they add to the already great soundtrack.
E. Bein
On one level, Vangelis has written music that works perfectly with the themes of the movie and helps to propel the story line.

When it was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2007 that a new "extended" 3-disc soundtrack of Vangelis' Blade Runner score would be released by the end of the year to coincide with the release of Ridley Scott's "Final Cut" Blade Runner (Five-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition), fans rejoiced with the assumption that the complete film score was finally getting an "official" release after numerous releases and bootlegs of varying lengths and sub-standard quality. Unfortunately if you are looking for the complete film score, this is not the CD you're looking for.

Disc 1 is a re-mastering of the 1994 Vangelis album (although it sounds identical to my original CD) which featured music from the film edited together with numerous dialog samples from the film as well as newly composed music by Vangelis that did not appear anywhere in the film. As an album, it was interesting thematically in its own right with some beautifully composed themes like "Rachel's Song" and "Damask Rose" but it was still not the original film soundtrack and was considered to be a disappointment.

Disc 2 features officially unreleased cues, some of which are not even heard anywhere in the film. Some are outtakes from the workprint but most of the memorable cues from the film are completely omitted such as the opening "Prologue" with the somber haunting Asian motif that establishes the dark tone and atmosphere of the film as well as the Egyptian Taffey Lewis club ambiance and the cues from when Deckard enters the Bradbury are not included.

There has been a lot written regarding this soundtrack. We still wonder why on earth it took Vangelis twelve years to finally release this treasure. There is still much speculation as to the reason why this happened, but in any case, after being forced to listen to grim renditions of the soundtrack and bad-sounding bootlegs, Vangelis' "Blade Runner" is well worth the wait. Many have attacked this work for having certain exerpts of dialog from the film on some of the tracks. I, however, find that this inclusion makes the tracks more interesting. Deckard's exchange with Rachael and Tyrell is a great introduction to "Blush Response" with the eerie music in the background. "Wait For Me," apparently inspired by the film and written in 1994 when the disc was released, is a hypnotic and seductive track with select, very well-chosen lines from Rachael.
Unlike the bootleg, Vangelis makes each track flow into one another. He does so with such fluidity and grace that one has to marvel at the production. Additionally, many have attacked this disc because Vangleis decided to leave out some crucial themes from the film, such as the "Main Titles and Prolouge" (which is included on the bootleg). I agree that the disc could have been more encompassing of all the music from the movie, but if you notice on the disc itself, it does not say "music from the official motion picture soundtrack" anywhere-it's essentially a Vangelis album with Blade Runner as its theme.
Another attractive aspect of the disc is, while there are some themes missing from the film, it does include four unreleased tracks not included in the film or the bootleg.

...of Vangelis NOT releasing more often than not what is actually the soundtrack of the movie it's supposed to be.
Let's see here: we find, on CD 1, the exact same record we had in 1994 - but that was expected and announced, so why not. On CD 2, labelled "unreleased and bonus material from BR", there is, actually, very little music heard in the film itself, except from two cues that are well-know, namely "D & R duel", and "Tyrell's Death". That ends here. "Tyrell's Owl", for instance, is anything but the actual music as heard in the film at that moment. As for CD 3, it's nothing more than a hackneyed collection of muzak, with fashionable world music overtones and indistinct speech put in the mix, and absolutely doesn't justify the purchase of the set alone. I doubt I'll listen to it twice.

All in all, I'm super tired of Vangelis NOT releasing, and never will now as it appears, the TRUE, ORIGINAL motion picture soundtrack of Blade Runner. Whatever artistic endeavour there was behind this project, it still is NOT, far from it, the ultimate ressource for BR music, I'm sorry to say. It's different music for the most part, perhaps to some pleasant or good music, but not the BR soundtrack by a long margin.

One word of advice: Keep your Deck Arts bootlegs preciously... They are the most comprehensive collection of BR music that were ever made.

This record set isn't.

I add my comments to help overwhelm anyone who's unsure whether to buy this soundtrack. It's very beautiful and haunting. It will linger in your head long after it's stopped playing. I'm thrilled Vangelis included pieces that weren't used in the film. "Wait For Me" and "Rachel's Song" make me feel as though I'm watching the film for the first time, despite having seen it dozens of times. And it was brilliant for Vangelis to blend each song into the next to create a seamless whole.
However, I also feel I don't need the dialogue from the film. And I thought the booklet had too many wasted pages with stills from the film. I can get all that from my DVD or my copy of the book about the making of Blade Runner.
Aside from those two minor carps, this is a must-have for any fan of the film, as well as for any music lover with a taste for a haunting, beautiful, and unusual soundtrack. They sure don't make them like this anymore.

Audio Fidelity Blade Runner SACD "Remastered" or "up-rezed"?
Video on youtube featuring mastering engineer Kevin Gray states that Audio Fidelity received a 24 bit 88.2 source for the project. It is the mastering for vinyl being discussed, but I would think they used that source for both releases. Check it out, it is interesting.
