Legends of Flatpicking,
By dave (dryland@sinbad.net) (Anchorage, AK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blake & Rice (Audio CD)
Anyone familiar with bluegrass will instantly recognize these talented flatpickers. Both Tony Rice and Norman Blake have greatly influenced many of today's up and coming guitarists and the role of the guitar in bluegrass music as well. This album is more than simply a collection of guitar duets. It is an example of the old and the new of bluegrass guitar coming together in perfect balance; a blend of Norman's traditional stylings coupled with the explosive rhythm and runs of Tony Rice. These two legends of flatpicking complement one another perfectly trading licks, leads, and vocals throughout. This CD gives the listener the feeling of Saturday evening on the front porch with Tony and Norman, watching them play as the sun slides below the horizon.

If you are a fan of acoustic music, this album will bring a tear to your eye. These are two of the finest flatpickers around and the way that they sound together is absolute and unmitigated beauty.

Norman and Tony obviously have an enormous amount of respect for each other. The music here is simple on the surface, but as you listen to the clean DDD recording you'll notice the amazing depth of intertwined medleys and rhythm lines that evolve to grab you, only never to appear again. This album is a must have for any collection.

These guys are incredible together! I've owned B&R II for years and am glad I finally got around to getting this one.

Great music, I enjoyed listening to it. Tony referring to Norman as "son" got to me after two or three times, but I enjoy their singing and playing very much.
