4.0 out of 5 stars Great find, November 14, 2007
This review is from: The Blakes (Audio CD)
High energy, emotional, striped-down rock, with great vocals and catchy hooks. It'll make your feet move and your mouth smile. The Blakes are a band I stumbled across and felt like I'd found a treasure. Any fan of great garage rock -- so basic and simple sounding that you know it took years of practice to get there -- will love this record.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic First Album, May 20, 2009
This review is from: The Blakes (Audio CD)
Listening to the Blakes' self-titled first album from start to finish promises two things: You will listen to it again (and again and again,) and the realization of their potential. Potential is every bit as scary as it is exciting. We've all seen bands introduce solid 1st albums only to disappoint with their follow up (i.e. The Fratellis' "Here We Stand.")

But, I'm getting ahead of myself with gloomy gospel. The Blakes flat out deliver on this album. They dance in and around guitar riffs that would make the Strokes and Billy Corgan proud...despite the fact that they sound NOTHING like the Pumpkins.

All in all, the energetic vocals, great guitar riffs, and symbol-soaked percussions make for a joyous treble-fest for any rock fan. The album goes great with any Spring/Summer weather, will do the trick for lounging around with friends sharing a few beers, and will more than suffice for a speaker-blaring joyride down the highway.

If these guys can get the right exposure, they're sure to go far. Although their sound is not necessarily unique, it is definitely catchy. I would highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys Franz Ferdinand and the like.
