About the Artist

Ridley Bent is an entertainer, a recording artist currently residing in Vancouver, B.C. He’s a crooner, a gee-tar player and a songwriter with a knack for detail. He’s hell on wheels with a microphone whether he’s fronting a band or on stage all by his lonesome. He has mastered the art of telling a story. Love and murder, dope and glory, politics, western fiction, pop culture is Ridley’s addiction. Throw in some break beats, phat bass, sweet country lead and a melody and you’ve got yourself an earful of ‘Hick Hop’. A new sound that’s already made more than a few jaws drop. Born in Halifax Nova Scotia, Ridley Bent spent his youth as an army-brat traversing across the vast expanses of Canada. He listened to his Pa play Johnny Cash and Hank Williams on his beat-up old guitar. He never did dig that old country and western. He preferred Brit-Pop and Hip Hop but those old tunes must have sunk into his subconscious because that southern twang is evident in his songs. He first picked up a guitar in Whistler BC when he came to the realization that a career as a professional skier was out of his reach. Against his loving mothers better judgment he decided to pursue a career in music. Maybe one day perform with Frank Black or the Beastie Boys. He figured if he told good stories, used lots of rhymes and played guitar at the same time, then as a songwriter, he’d probably do just fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars The rebirth of lyricism May 20, 2005
Format:Audio CD
I have been in a funk over the state of music lately. Too much empty-headed entertainment. No one seems to be able to tell a story any more.
Enter Ridley Bent. I have been hearing his name around Vancouver since I returned last year. A site came across my path with the lyrics to Suicidewinder on it:
I'm Johnny Cash when I'm drinkin',
I'm the Clash when I'm thinkin'
I'm Mad Max when I'm drivin',
I'm Mike Diamond when I'm rhymin'
I'm Humphrey Bogart when I'm smokin',
I'm Bob Marley when I'm tokin
And in bed when I'm dreamin'
I'm a guitar slingin' demon.
Now first of all that's quite a set of names to drop. And to understand that The Clash was music intended to make you think is evidence that he's seeing beyond "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" Besides that, this reads like a reader's digest version of my record collection.
I tracked down more of his music and was steadily and steadfastly sucked in.
Bent will be referred to as "Hick Hop", but don't let that mislead you. Yes, the hip hop and country influences are in evidence, but listen further and you'll also hear echos of Tom Waits and Pete Seeger, mixed with humour, aggression, affection, and just plain smarts. The rhythms are clear and infectious, without being overbearing. This is a man who is not to be underestimated.
It is the most interesting, enjoyable, and tasty piece of work I've heard in a long time. Succumb to your curiosity and you'll be amply rewarded.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rockin' Guilty Pleasure July 25, 2006
Format:Audio CD
Ridley Bent's "Blam" is an infectious CD which is funny, thoughtful, rockin, cool. The best tracks are the amazing Suicidewinder ("I'm Johnny Cash When I'm Drinking" Etc.) and David Harley's Son (a kind of countrified noir tale). Think Charlie Daniels crossed with Eminem crossed with Rage Against the Machine. Can't imagine it? Listen! It's a blast!
