5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Debut Album From A Rising Artist, July 2, 2007
By
This review is from: Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom (Audio CD)
Jana Hunter delivers a debut album full of promise and musical mysticism. Hunter's music could be described as alternative folk. Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom is a collection of haunting and devastating pieces rich with sincere melodies and lyrics. As a rule of thumb I don't care for a lot of music with lyrics but only because I think that most people are quite inept at doing anything artful with language. Hunter is a poet as much as a musician and her music in this album has the somber feeling of a confession. She wails, whispers and harmonizes; a delicate beauty is alive throughout the whole of her work. Many tracks have a homegrown outsider texture that reminds me of the early recordings of Beck as heard on his album "One Foot in the Grave." I highly recommend this album and if you have a chance to see Jana Hunter perform live, let nothing stop you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for late dark nights, w/ candle lit & lights out, September 30, 2006

This is truly haunting, atmospheric stuff. Like another reviewer, I discovered Jana Hunter at live show, opened by the Castanets. She played w/ her brother, and her laid-back performance & unique sound struck me. To support such independent musicians, I bought her CD. And, much more than I'd expected, I really came to play it often ...though always at night, usually before bed, and usually when I'm alone. I've recently discovered Jolie Holland's 'Springtime Could Kill You' & it reminds me a bit of Jana Hunter's album. As does, I suppose, the first Cowboy Junkies album -- though that has a much cleaner sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Good, April 7, 2006
This review is from: Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom (Audio CD)
I first heard of Jana when i went to her cd release party, i had no idea who she was, i just wanted something to do. It was a great decision, Jana is an amazing singer/songwriter. The cd is fantstic, the opening song, all the best wishes, opens with a awesome hazy distortion on the vocals. This cd sounds like at times it was recorded in a dimly lit concrete room or area (not a recording studio). The cd is very minimalist, and only asks for help on a few tracks. Jana's voice is something of a wrecking force, its amazing. It gets a southerny accent, but remains dark and mysterious. This cd, is very melancholy though, so if that would be a forewarning, its pretty haunting and sad. But don't let that take you away from this cd, its fantastic!

Men get mad, women get sad. The sound of a lost soul in the TX wasteland.
