As a board book, the pictures are necessarily a bit small, but Patricelli keeps them as simple as her brief narrative. 2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
My son is a blankie kid and loves books, so I thought this would be perfect. As artists, we loved the illustration style, but there are ideas in the book that we don't want to promote - being afraid of the dark, having to go home when we forget blankie, etc. We're putting it in the donation pile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Linus Revisited, July 29, 2006
This review is from: Blankie (Leslie Patricelli board books) (Board book)
As a board book, the pictures are necessarily a bit small, but Patricelli keeps them as simple as her brief narrative. The book nicely introduces toddlers (and younger) to a variety of settings, including "my school," "the store," " even to the doctor." These are just some of the places where Blankie accompanies the {unnamed) baby protagonist, a real cutie with bright cheeks and a single curly hair.

Blankie is there for the laughter (TV, playing with kitty. a spirited game of PEEK A BOO , jumping onto the bed--Superman like--with Blankies as a cape!), and the tears (time-outs, bedtime), and a conflict here and there: "We (the baby abd his blankie, that is) don't have to play with anybody else (a little girl is shown crying), but sometimes we do (they're both happy). Blankies is a reassuring friend, something that keeps the baby company (even when brushing his teeth), listens to bedtimes stories, and, very important, "isn't afraid of the dark." I like how accepting the book is of the whole Blankie idea, there's no judgement or undertones of "but when will he outgrow it?" Instead it shows Blankie's importance in regulating emotions and offering the reassuring qualities that the child puts into it. I think most people can attest to the help that a "Blankie" or Blankie-like object gave their young child, and that, sooner or later, the boy or girl eventually is less dependent on it.

BUt for ahile, that security blanket is a very important thing:
"I love Kitty."
I love Bear."
I LOVE birthday cake...
but I love Blankie best of all.
And Blankie loves me!

A book almost as cute and lovingly reassuring as a favorite stuffed animal or BLANKIE. 23 sturdy, board-book pages, with bold illustrations done with acrylic, typeset in the new "Leslie Petrocelli" font (this has a nice, slight childlike look, but the ettering is bold an very legible), with illustrations done in acrylic. Simple and enertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars A blankie lover's favorite., August 11, 2005

This is my one year old's favorite book. She laughs out loud every time she see's "Super Blankie". The artwork is simple and sweet, while the story captures the true pleasures of a security object. It is a daily read (multiple times) and is always accompanied by her "blankie".

5.0 out of 5 stars Toddler's Favorite Book, September 18, 2005
This review is from: Blankie (Leslie Patricelli board books) (Board book)
My 2 year old is really into all of Leslie Patricelli's books right now. The little baby/toddler character is right on with my son's actions & thinking. The books are really cute. This one is his favorite right now. We read it about five times a day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect book about my favorite Blankie!, May 14, 2005
This review is from: Blankie (Leslie Patricelli board books) (Board book)
I am 29 years old and I still sleep with my blankie. This book is great -- it captures all the emotions I remember from growing up with a blankie that never left my side. If your baby has a blanky or if you used to (or you still do), read this book. It's priceless!

5.0 out of 5 stars Never too old!, November 5, 2005
This review is from: Blankie (Leslie Patricelli board books) (Board book)
I gave this book to my 6'3" son on his 17th birthday! Everything in it reminded us of his younger years, carrying that blanket around until he was in puberty. Now he has his "pillow" which he carries all around the house, with a special ratty pillow case. He just can't wrap it around his neck and play super hero any longer. What a sweet book to remind us of an even sweeter time.

I come to this as a big fan of Leslie Patricelli's first three books. The reader is treated to more hilarious illustrations which are accompanied by a really sweet story about attachment to a blankie. I read this to my 7 mth old and look forward to more from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, appealing to babies, but questionable content, May 11, 2008

The simple illustrations, the colored backgrounds, the adorable little baby--these are all great reasons to buy this book, especially if your little one is already on their way to becoming attached to his/her blankie. My son happens to adore his, and he truly does take it everywhere with him.

There is some controversy over the part where he takes the blankie to his time-outs (and the image shows him crying). I think one of the odd things about this book is that, while the main character is clearly a baby, there are several references that are more appropriate for an older character--I'm thinking both of the time-out scene and also the taking the blankie to school scene. Honestly, the time-out thing does not particularly concern me--I don't think it is meant to portray an infant/toddler too young to understand a time-out, and at the very least it makes for something interesting to talk about with an older child.

What actually kept me from giving the book 5 stars is toward the end. Kids emulate characters they like, and the lines "I don't like bedtime...." and "Blankie isn't afraid of the dark, but I am" seem very suggestive to me, and are in locations that are difficult to skip. My son loves to go to bed and is NOT afraid of the dark, and I hate for him to get the idea he should be! Still....

The best part of these books, in my mind, is that they have just a handful of words on each page, but unlike other books of this length, there are sufficient pages that there is a distinct progression in the "story", and it's long enough that he doesn't always insist on reading it 20 times in a row; but not so long that he can't finish it in one sitting.

My son is quite picky about books, and he loves all the Leslie Patricelli books, so we buy then, read them (over and over and over!), and accept that, unless we write the book ourselves, there will always be topics we don't love in the books our kids read.

we adore this book and all the others written by Leslie Patricelli, but I also skip the pages about not liking bedtime and being afraid of the dark. I just say "when I go to bed, blankie keeps me company...and then I snuggle up with blankie, nice and warm".

I love the drawings, the baby in the book and the simple words and ideas. I will be buying the rest of these books soon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Super Blankie, January 12, 2009
This review is from: Blankie (Board book)
This used to be my oldest daughters favorite book, now it's my youngest daughter's favorite. The simple and vibrant illustrations keep toddlers focused on the book and easy to understand story is bound to attract you minds. Although giving an idea that kids watch things over and over and over again is something I want to avoid it is not a teaching book and it's something I as a parent has to control and not blame the book for it. I think it's a great first time book for any baby.
