Why Blarney Castle,

This review is from: Blarney Castle: Its History, Development and Purpose (Hardcover)
Everyone, more or less, has heard of the Blarney Stone but who really knows much about the castle or the social system in Ireland at that time. The author of this book does an excellent job of detailing the building of the castle and why it was built the way was. The book is excellent.

This review is from: Blarney Castle: Its History, Development and Purpose (Hardcover)
Co-authored by archaeologist and architectural historian Mark Samuel and freelance writer and archaeology enthusiast Kate Hamlyn, "Blarney Castle: it's History, Development And Purpose" is a comprehensive, informative, and nicely illustrated guide to Ireland's famed Blarney Castle, including its history and the three families who owned it. The castle's role within Gaelic society in general and the clan organization in particular, is especially informative. The detailed history of the Mac Carhty Muskerry clan, the Jeffereys and the Colthursts, with respect to their successive relationship to the castle is fully described. A welcome addition to personal, community, and academic library Irish History reference collections and supplemental reading lists, "Blarney Castle" is especially recommended to the attention of non-specialist general readers with an interest in Irish history, the Blarney Castle, and its most famous feature -- the Blarney Stone.
