Mesmerizing, December 21, 2008
This CD is dark and mesmerizing--in a wonderful way. The songs combine a young person's angst and simplicity-innocence with an ancient timeless soulfulness and depth. Of course, it's Mayfield's unique voice and rendering that captures this complexity and transforms the songs into something moving, intimate, private, rivoting and real. Spellbinding. (by author or Through One Tear: Poems)

If you like music filled with melancholy atmosphere, you'll love this!, September 17, 2009
I stumbled upon this artist accidentally on youtube. My first thought upon hearing that lazy drawl was "what the heck is this??!!" - and not in a good way. But something made me keep listening, and I'm so glad I did. Once I got over my initial surprise, I was hooked.
There's a feel that permeates Jessica's music, as if you are listening to someone who doesn't know they're being overheard. As if you'd walked past a room in a movie or a book, where Becky from What's Eating Gilbert Grape or Earlene from The Beans of Egypt, Maine, were going about their busy day and singing to themselves. There's a kind of Applachian quality to it, but one that is seasoned with a pinch of indy, and maybe a dash of punk.
She's young, and her subject matter shows it. But she's not someone who whines or creates drama about her life. She *observes* it, and then paints a picture for us to share in the experience. She creates a mood and I love that she stays with it, like any good book you wish could go on a little longer.

Jessica is Great Musical Talent, July 31, 2009
Saw Jessica Lea Mayfield open for Ray Lamontagne a few months ago. It was the first time we'd heard of her and we were awesomely impressed. Next day, we ordered her CD from Amazon. Not disappointed at all, even though she played the songs in her opening act. These songs are simply-produced (by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys) and reach me on various levels. The lyrics are phenomonal. I've already played the entire CD in my car several times.
