GameSpot Review

Whether you'll admit it or not, I'm willing to bet that there was a time in your life when there was nothing cooler in the world than watching construction equipment do their thing. I'm also fairly sure that you spent a great deal of time sitting around in your backyard filling up hapless Tonka trucks with dirt, sticks, and rocks - and making engine noises with your lips that would leave anyone within a three mile radius of you covered in saliva. Unfortunately those halcyon days of youth have passed, and we must move on to more adult pursuits. Like Nintendo's newest N64 title, Blast Corps. In this frighteningly entertaining new cart, developers Rare have gone all out, combining nuclear weapons, giant robots, construction vehicles, AND load motor noises in one title. The results are spectacular.

Unlike most games that revolve around destruction, Blast Corps actually gives you a pretty good reason for leveling an entire city block. A nuclear device has started leaking, and it's headed on an automatic path through the middle of several populated towns. You've got to destroy any buildings in the carrier's way, find glowing dots called RDUs (there's a rational explanation for this too, but it escapes me right now), and free any trapped civilians in order to beat each level and move on to another part of the globe. Although this sounds fairly mindless, the unique relationship between the terrain and the vehicles you pilot ensures that Blast Corps will exercise your mind as well as your reflexes.

And there are plenty of vehicles to choose from: Ramdozer, a powerful and easily control bulldozer; Backlash, a bizarre dump truck that requires you to attack by sliding into buildings; Skyfall, a weird race car that forces you to drop down on top of buildings; Thunderfist, a giant robot that rolls along the ground like an armored bowling ball; and best of all, J-Bomb, a flying monstrosity that blasts into the air, and then slams into the ground laying waste to all beneath it. This is by no means a complete list of the many devices that you get a chance to control during the course of the game - trains, cranes, and even police cars can become tools in your effort to save the populace.

So basically what you have here is a game with great graphics, great sound, and a great premise. What's even more impressive is that the game doesn't really have any substantial flaws to speak of - unless you want to count lack of a two-player mode, which really isn't fair. If you've got a N64, and you're into puzzle or action games, I highly, highly recommend this cartridge. --Trent C. Ward

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good game, November 9, 2000

"Blast Corps" isn't as bad as some people make it out to be. I liked most of the game. The main objective is to destroy buildings using a bunch of different vehicles and robots such as a bulldozer, a motorcycle that can shoot bombs, and a huge robot that can stomp on top of the buildings. However, it's not as easy as it sounds. For example, with the bulldozer you can knock down the buildings by running into them head on, but the most effective way to do it with the bulldozer is to side-swipe the building by skidding into it. The bad thing is that once you get past about half of the game, "Blast Corps" starts to get a little confusing and overly difficult. In one level, you have to operate a crane to somehow destroy the buildings, in some you have to ride a train to get to the other side of town before time runs out, and the real killer is running out of bombs with the motorcycle.

Destroying buildings isn't the only thing you have to do in "Blast Corps." In some levels, you'll drive a small, but fast car and try to light up all the lights that look like bombs on the ground. Other than the game being confusing and impossibly hard in some levels, there's not that much I can complain about with "Blast Corps." I thought it was fun using the robot and the bulldozer to destroy all the buildings, and the game has some of the best graphics for the Nintendo 64. When you're inside the train while it's taking you across the level, the train actually looks realistic like it's a real train. The music is a little cheesy, but the sound overall is pretty good. The control will take some practice before you master it, but once you do, it's not all that bad.

If you think destroying buildings is fun, I would recommend at least renting "Blast Corps." Overall, it's not that bad of a game.

This is one of the smartest and most demanding games you will ever play. It is tetris, but with little men that get into special vehicles that you operate to move objects around a city path to allow a runaway nuclear bomb on a truck a clear path. It is not as easy as it seems, is very addictive and some of the best fun I ever had playing any game. There was nothing quite like. I played this for thinking and Turok for shooting. I remember this impressed quite a few brain friends I had. They loved it. It is quite a thrill also. Tense when you get near the end and the nuclear lorry is right on your tail. Amazing concept. Thanks for these memories and happy times.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, July 8, 2005

It's fun to destroy stuff in this game. Blowing up whole towns just doesn't get old. I don't know how successful this game was, but it seems it was underrated. I rented it once and enjoyed it a lot. The only problem I had with it was it got pretty difficult after finishing some of the easier levels, and I don't think there were all that many easy levels.
