3.0 out of 5 stars Keeps gameplay of original, but loses a little..., January 7, 2003
This review is from: Blaster Master - Blasting Again (Video Game)
This PSX sequel to the NES hit has its ups and downs. For one, the controls are hard to master. For another, the bad guys are slightly more difficult. But the graphics look nice and the story has depth, which is good. In this game, like the original, you pilot a giant mech machine that blasts weird beings that live underground. Press select to get out of the vehicle and go one-on-one, or just wreak havoc and blast everything in sight. Some good fun, but not the game to play for a few hours.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game, but loses a little in the execution.., October 10, 2005

= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Blaster Master - Blasting Again (Video Game)
Back in 2000 when I was working with Sunsoft on this game, I thought it was really interesting that we would be bringing a title (Blaster Master), which was traditionally a 2D platform shooter, into the 3D arena. That concept brings with it a good amount of new variables which weren't even considered in the 2D landscape. Still, after many months of work I think the game turned out really well (especially considering we had to scrap the original engine after doing a hard review, and start from scratch with a new engine) With that in mind, here's my review of BMBA:

Sound/Music: When the player jumps with the Sophia tank, the game really gives that "BOOM" effect as the tank lurches upward. When things explode, they explode well. Soundtrack-wise, the intro tune is catchy and many of the levels use a sort of techno-trance beat which fits in well.

Gameplay: The viewpoint is presented in an over-the-shoulder perspective, and its easy to target enemies because of this. Much of the original gameplay is maintained except now there are more degrees of freedom. Sometimes the terrain was blurring into itself (the levels are underground, so a lot of stuff looks the same), but its not too difficult to see the height changes or such. One thing that bugs me is that the model of Sophia actually changes green, etc depending on the upgrade you use. It never made much sense to me. The game is sort of linear, but you can (and have to) travel back and forth between areas to progress through some parts of the game. I would have liked to see more variation in the levels and enemies.

Graphics: Since the game was developed for the PSX (although it is PS2 compatible and will use the improved graphics controller to present sharper images), the graphics are a bit dated. Also there isn't much variety in enemies or terrain, although there are plenty of bosses to fight. The cutscenes are excellent.

Overall: Even if you're not a BM fan this might be a fun rainy day/afternoon distraction. It doesn't take too much effort to learn the game, and you'll have some challenge traversing the different caves to get to different areas and fight new bosses. If you're a BM fan, you may or may not like this game since its a 3D shooter. I really enjoyed it though: it gave me enough challenge to want to play it all the way through.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good solid game, December 14, 2001
This review is from: Blaster Master - Blasting Again (Video Game)
This game is definately worth buying for Blaster Master Fans. And Although it's now 3D, it still plays pretty well. The controls are well established, with my only grievence being the Strafe button for Jason is right above the camera angle button, which can get frustrating when starting out. But the music is well done, there's a few re-mixed songs from the first game inside, and the FMVs are really awesome to sit and watch. So maybe you're wondering why I've rated this game with only 4 stars instead of 5 if the game is so great? Well sadly, they couldn't resist putting in dubbed voice acting at some parts, luckily it isn't very frequent, but there were some pretty bad voices in there. Over all, though, this is a few good hours of game play. Although still not quite as good as the original(IMHO) Roddy is a pretty cool guy, but he'll never be as cool as Jason.
