5.0 out of 5 stars A great stereo for the right price, April 23, 2008
This review is from: Blaupunkt Key West MP36 MP3/CD Receiver (Electronics)
Update 06-27-09: Still works great. Wish the buttons did not feel so hard. Listening less to the radio and more to the disc player. Regular radio is so crammed full of commercials and offers so little GOOD music anymore.

Update: six months later and the stereo has been flawless. I'm still very happy with it.

I have always had Asian stereos but I drive a VW Cabrio and wanted something that would plug right in (no hacking of the wiring harness).

The OEM stereo was ten years old and it's volume knob and display were failing. This stereo plugged right in to the original harness. If you have a VW you'll need a $5 antenna adapter b/c the VW antenna cable is a little different from normal antenna connections. I was able to get it locally right off the shelf.

Was able to match the dash lighting with the Blaupunkt. Stereo sounds very good, adjustable in dozens of ways, removeable face with case provided so I can park the Cabrio anywhere and lock the face plate in the trunk. Good FM reception. So far I have NO AM reception at all. I think there is a setting for which country you are in that I have to investigate. It has three FM memory banks. I use the first two for local stations and reserve the third (FM-T = FM-Travel) b/c by using the auto travel tune feature anything in that memory bank will be replaced by the new stations. Only the FM-T bank, not FM1 or FM2.

Downside are the buttons. While the volume knob has the best feel ever, it takes far more than one revolution to take the volume from minimum to maximum. Of course once you have the auto-on volume set you may never need to go from minimum to maximum. There is also a MUTE feature. There is also a pause feature for the CD player (YAY!).

The other buttons are hard. I mean they move inward very little and the clicking sensation is very hard feeling. Maybe this will translate to long life for the buttons but I prefer the buttons on our 8 year old OEM Honda stereo. I think that is a Clarion. Not a show stopper at all though. The remote is a thin little thing with plastic membrane buttons. Our car is small so I don't have much need for the remote. In our VW Westfalia a stereo with a remote is a wonderful thing.

There is an AUX-in feature but you have to buy a separate adapter. It plugs into the rear of the stereo and then you have a headphone cable to fish through the dash and out to the floor. I'll add this feature but use a headphone jack (the female portion) and drill a hole somewhere in the console and then use a headphone cord with male ends on both ends to connect to it. The adapter looks like it is about $10 from retailers.

The bluetooth, phone/NAV auto mute and so on all appear to require additional parts. Would be nice features but I don't need them.

Was nice to see that the display was able to show the CD song titles even on some regular CDs. MP3 and WMA discs will do this too of course.

I am seriously considering buying two more for our other (vintage) VWs that we are restoring.

This replaced the becker and has all the features I wanted that the becker did not at a bargain price.

MP3, remote, travel search, removable faceplate, very nice display, Volume adjusts automatically to vehicle speed and much more.

It was easy to replace with an adapter plug from pepboyes.
