When I think of flashy, fast-paced fighting games with an anime style, the BlazBlue series has been the first one to spring into my mind for the last five years or so. The games are always frantically paced, with incredibly catching visuals and a surprisingly deep system. The development team has outdone itself with this latest release, bringing everything that is great about the series together in a PlayStation 4 release that keeps me coming back for more.

I have been excited for this game since it was first announced, and the love and attention that the development team put into this game shows. Right from the stylish intro and into the tutorials section, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend feels like it has just about everything in order. The first menu offers to teach you the basics of the game - and these are basics that show up in a lot of other fighting games as well. From basic movements to more advanced combinations, the tutorials teach you how to make the most out of the flashy combat system.

Once you have cut your teeth on that (or if you are already familiar with the different systems), the next logical step for those who really want to get to know how a character works is to try out some of the challenges. These are character specific combos that become increasingly difficult to pull off. Both of these games are found in most fighting games, and I would argue should be standard in all fighting games, but here they are pulled off near flawlessly.

For those who are new to the series, there is sort of 'history of the game' feature that seems like a great idea, but is probably one of the few areas where I found the execution to be personally lacking.

First off I play a lot of fighting games and actually have the collectors edition of the original release on PS3 for this title. I was excited about this coming to PS4 honestly as the last tournament I was in was PS4 dominated. Now that it has Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign-, Ultra Street Fighter IV, Skullgirls 2nd Encore, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round, Injustice Gods Among Us, Mortal Kombat X, J-Star Victory VS+, a Saint Seya game which is download only in the US, and now this one is really starting to add up quick. Of course at the time I am writing this Nitroplus Blaster Heriones is not out yet, Street Fighter V is coming in February, King of Fighters XIV is sometime in 2016, likely Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelate-, and maybe we will see Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax Ignition in the US as well. I really like my fighters.

Anyway as someone that did have this on PS3 and the original version there have been some changes. Many of the characters got new moves and changed up moves with the addition of a new gauge. While it does not change everything, it added a lot more depth to the game. They added two more characters to the roster which is rather typical of BlazBlue. One of those characters is a returning one actually. The new story segments are nice and the game feels a bit smoother than it used to.

With that being said, I still feel like Capcom does it best when it comes to DLC and new versions. I might receive some hate for this, but Street Fighter IV only got one now add-on style release with Super Street Fighter IV which massively increased the roster, added entirely new openings and endings for the original cast as it took place a little later in the story and added new modes and features. Arcade Edition and Ultra could both be bought as $14.

If your a fan of King of the Fighters than you'll like BlazBlue. Not only is gameplay good but there's a lot of nice bonus and goodies packed in this game. This is definitely a new favorite. Compared to KoF theres actually a story here that looks like it will come to an end in the next installment.

Great game in the line of Blazblue games, the game play is as fun as ever with the new over drive abilities and combo mix-ups. Online is kind of dead for the most part now, which is unfortunate for people who might want to pick it up now. If you do play online know that most of the players still playing are VERY experienced, so be prepared to put in a lot of time training and challenge mode to learn combos. Playing online you will spend a good amount of time getting your butt handed to you as you learn and master your characters, but it does pay off in the long run to stick through it and learn your match ups. Story mode is super long and detailed, you will literally spend hours in it. Some of the new voice actors and sound effects feel cheaper this time around, but that's still a minor gripe when compared to the overall package and price in which you can pick this game up for now.

Amazing add-on to the Blazblue Universe. I owned the original Phantasma but felt that I had to own the PS4 version, as well as see all the extras they added to the game.
