5.0 out of 5 stars If you've never gotten into Blazblue, now is the time! February 18, 2012
Platform for Display:PS3|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
To anyone that has never experienced Blazblue first-hand, this is the game to buy. Or if you missed out on the previous game, this "Extended" follow-up is really the way to go. People who may have bought the first version of Continuum Shift, please note that this isn't a continuation as much as it is an update with a few character additions and changes to modes.

**Why Newbies to Blazblue should buy:
- The first game is re-told: In story mode, the Extend version gives a condensed retelling of the first Blazeblue game, Calamity Trigger. The re-telling of the Calamity Trigger tale is actually pretty lengthy and Arc System Works discovered ways to involve more characters in the story that were vaguely featured in the first game (such as Tsubaki, Makoto and Hazama). The drawback to the condense version is that it doesn't feature some important unique characterizations found in the first game. You don't learn about Tager and his connection to Kokonoe, Hakumen's role is awkward and never really explained, and the fun-loving Bang doesn't get his moment to shine (does "talk to the hand girlfriend, for I am Bang Shishigami" ring a bell?).

- Not as demanding the the previous Continuum Shift: The last game was hardcore. I would put it on the same level as Super Street Fighter IV due to the online and offline requirements for trophies/achievements. In the Extended version, the game still finds ways to challenge you like the previous game, but it's much more relaxed. Combo trials now feature a lot more variations (15 trials instead of the previous 10), which can help the player learn tactics they may not have even thought of using in battle. Another change involves the way the player levels up in the game, which is no longer dependent on playing online, but playing offline counts much more this time around. Basically, doing anything in the game will earn you points to help you level up!

**Why Blazblue Fans should grab this:
- New stories for new faces: The last game introduced three new DLC characters. In the Extended version, their never-before told tales get included in the Blazblue saga. This version also introduces a brand new playable character, Relius. If you've played Continuum Shift's story previously, you might want to know all the stories featured in the last game are exactly the same with no changes. Players that have completed parts of story mode in the previous version of Continuum Shift will be happy to know a nice feature is made available to import the save file from the older game into the new game. It will definitely save you time from having to unlock items in the Gallery mode all over again.

- Legion mode begone and enter the Abyss: That's right. Legion mode this time around has been traded in for Abyss mode. The Abyss is you taking a character into the depths of world and facing waves upon waves of enemies. The further you travel, the more powerful and complicated your enemies become. You'll eventually unlock perks to use in battle to make your character more even against your foes.

**Overall: If you've never had the pleasure of playing Blazblue, do yourself a favor and give it a try. What makes Blazblue special is that it does something many fighting games don't do. First, story is just as important as the fighting. It's rare to find a fighting game that takes time to not just create a story, but create a world of history and interweaving relationships. Secondly, every character is unique, different and down-right bizarre. You won't find character clones or similar move-sets in this. Lastly, the voice acting is top-notch. Usually if a Japanese game gives the option of selecting the original language track, I go for it. Blazblue is a rare, shining example of how an English dub can be as equally great as the original voice-over work. This is seriously one of the best fighters you can own.

To those familiar with Blazblue, it might be discouraging for some players that it's just an update of the last game. To those who really are true fans of the series and even if they may own the original Continuum Shift, you can't go wrong with this. If anyone is thinking of purchasing the Limited Edition, do know that the calendar is very tiny and the art book is just as small.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good air-dasher, with some glaring flaws April 22, 2012

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
First, the game-play: the characters are all wildly different in terms of play-style, owing to their special "Drive" moves; this can make learning the game more difficult, but the trade-off is that your possibilities are greatly expanded. Even with this variety the game has been very well balanced, though some do have a slightly easier time of it, such as Valk. The addition of Abyss mode is nice, with some rpg-like character customization possible, as well as an increasing level of speed for people who think regular BB is too slow. There is a training mode, but it really isn't too helpful past the very basics, beyond that the challenge mode is ok, but it only teaches a couple combos per character that are widely useful. If you like this type of fighting game at all, you'll find a deep, fun game here; with a unique play-style for almost everyone.
Gameplay=*****

As far as the story, I think it's pretty good as far as fighting games go, with reasonable characterization, some growth, a few surprises, and a little levity though the story is fairly dark. However, this is the area where the main flaw lies, and the reason I'm writing a review: the translation is terrible. Really just terrible, it reminds me of old 80's anime where profanity and random lines were inserted for no reason other than to make it "edgy." While there is less profanity, several characters have almost every line they utter changed to impose the translators view of them, which amounts to tired cliches, memes, and full sentences of insults which don't exist in the Japanese. The main victims of this are Rachel, Hazama, Bang, and Makoto, though no-one escapes completely. It's frustrating for me because the story and characters are being presented in a serious way for the most part, but it is all undercut by inane things like Hazama saying "Pro tip," and Makoto talking like a valley girl. I suspect the subtitles are really a dub-lation, ie. writing down the dubs lines as if it were a translation even though they have different purposes, but I haven't been able to bring myself to listen to the English yet to check.
Story=****
Translation=* it's good when translating non-spoken lines; and the general gist of things is (usually, mostly) intact, just caked in stupidity

As another review said the extra material that comes with the LE of CS:E is really underwhelming, with an "art book" which has almost only images found in Calamity Trigger's gallery, and in a very small format at that. The calendar is ok, but the pictures used aren't very interesting at all, being only the character and their crest. The best part is the soundtrack, as you might have expected; it has a mix of instrumentals from the game, as well as vocals, which as long as you like the music in BB in general you'll be pleased with it.
Extras=**1/2

tl;dr = Good gameplay, bad extras, inexcusable translation; seriously, whoever did it needs to stop doing translations, whether they were part of Arc or Aksys

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a game, but an experience March 15, 2012
Platform for Display:PS3|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Most likely if you've even considered getting this game, it's because you love fighting games, guilty gear, Japanese fighters, or had a good recommendation. The action is very fun once you get baptized into the community. You WILL get murdered online if you haven't played before. DONT be scared. People do practice and it does take a little practice....but think about how many insane hours people put into adventure games, RPGs, shooters, and just games in general. All games have a learning curve, and this game is no different. However, once you get used to the frantic nature of the game, you'll be VERY happy you got it.

I haven't been able to play since I don't have a tv right now and because of an accident I got in a while ago, but I've played the previous 2 games, and was ranked fairly high in the first. Unlike street fighter, you'll come to have a "main," and a "sub" character. Respectively, your main is your primary character who will define you as a player. Think of him or her as being synonymous w/your favorite color; they will become part of you. Your sub will be another character you also like, who you'll practice after you have your main down pretty well. You'll know when you do. Just fry to be patient, there are lots of people willing to help, play casually, and just have fun, so don't get discouraged - many are willing to hold your hand. And with extensive forums available, with videos online , you'll never be lost.

The story in blazblue is also another great feature of the game. I must say, it's refreshing to have such an expanding, dynamic story with each major release. You can decide to indoctrinate yourself into the blazblue world...or just primarily play online. I chose the latter and basically got the entire story from listening to friends online. Later, I decided to try out story mode, and I was glad I did. The game doesn't force you to do something in story mode to unlock anyone, like most games did back in the day. Gone are the days of playing (a generic) story mode 13 times just to get ONE character. No way. Some people might be put off by the characters for being a bit "eccentric," or different, but it's a blessing. Truly. In addition, arc system works REFUSES to make cheap duplicate characters (e.g. Ryu & Ken, [old] smoke & scorpion) so all characters feel (and are) daftly unique. Bang for instance, a ninja, is the COMPLETE opposite of your typical ninja. he ISN'T quiet, he ISNT smooth or stealthy, and is the source of a lot of comedic relief. Even if you don't like bang as a player, he's sure to elicit A laugh from all who play. Think of bang as the class clown, although a lovable one who fights for justice. If you didn't already notice, bang's name speaks for itself. He even has his own theme song! one of MY favorite characters is the (incredibly) graceful litchi, a woman bang is completely infatuated with...but will never get (except in his dreams, literally). Though all characters move and combo with fierce conviction once you get acclimated to them, litchi especially plays as if each move was exquisitely choreographed. Now, since there are 19(!) characters on the roster, you'll never get bored. I forgot to mention earlier, but for each character, there's an extensive tutorial mode to ease you into learning how to play each character. It's hands down the BEST tutorial mode you'll ever play.

The great thing about this game is how ALL characters are equally strong. There are no "akumas" here who are much stronger in a "broken" sense. Naturally, some players are a bit easier to learn, or might have to work a bit more for damage, but all characters are a threat. I can't express how amazing this game is. Honestly...ever since playing mortal kombat trilogy, soul calibur, and guilty gear, this game snugly fits in with the other fighting greats as a notable title. Once you get some online friends, the online experience is wonderful. There's certainly a reason people keep coming back for more. The joy people have for the game is pleasantly palpable. Also, make sure you get yourself a bluetooth mic, itll be very necessary to talk online to avoid typing all day. If you have a PS3 and 360 consoles, or are getting this as a first game for a system, do yourself a favor and get the ps3 version. It has the best competition. Almost everyone agrees.

To fuel the spirit of competition, a well-implemented ranking system is put in place to encourage play. Along with that is a level system to mark your skill as you play. It's nice because with each fight you gain experience. You never go down a rank for losing, instead you just get a small amount of experience. To stay competitive, you'll need to get familiar with rapid cancels, barrier burst, and barrier block, among other things. As noted earlier, the tutorial mode teaches all of the things with finesse. After playing for a while, the combos you'll pull off will astound you and others. To complement these systems, AMAZING graphics are used.

Though not completely 3D, this game is like a work of art. All sprites are hand-drawn. If you have enough money, GET A GOOD 1080p TV. trust me, you'll be glad you did. The particle effects are nothing short of spectacular. I would go on and on about this game, but You should get the picture by now. If you're tired of cliche fighting games and the people who play them, this game is for you. So do yourself a favor and order this game and prepare for not only a game, but an experience.

P.S. If anyone wants to, add me to your friends list. I'm "glencocoe" and will be returning when I get the chance. I'm o. The ps3 version of the game.
